I wonder if he continued to at least rip Tomas Nido in the same fashion for him to be still standing on first base?
Go to the MLB website for the game, pull up the video of that play. At the end of the video where they showed Escobar didn't run through any sign, Cora was waving him and then looked like he was going to stop him, but kept waving him on because he probably put the stop sign up too late. Look at Hayes. His glove is off as he watches the play, and he's pulling out a handful of sunflower seeds.
Pirates and Hayes are getting lambasted on twitter right now.

Thoughts? I already know where this is going with some people.
Wow! That's a new one. I've never before seen a player take a time out to eat in the middle of a play. I wonder if that falls under the "plays hard for Shelton" category.

I guess we should be grateful he didn't pull out a fold-up table and chair and a plate of spaghetti. Maybe he could get Castro to call Doordash between pitches.
Players need to be held accountable. Hayes deserves a seat on the bench today. But Shelton usually treats a seat on the bench as a reward for a good game so I guess nothing will be done to Hayes.
I was reading a lot of replies on the twitter thread. Many were defending him, saying he's out of the play, no big deal. That was probably a fact. But I agree with others who say it shows a guy who might be checked out for the season, it's a bad look for the team as a whole, and it's the kind of thing you don't do to build a winning culture.
I'm going to be watching a lot of baseball today, and hoping this will come up somewhere. A lot of people bashing him because of who his dad is, who never gave that kind of look from what I know.
There is no putting the genie back in the bottle with the way Shelton has been managing this team. Even if they start getting some of these guys elevating their games next season, even if the cautious promise of a potential competent, though young starting rotation emerging for next season plays out, it's this kind of attention to detail that needs to be fixed, and too much of this stuff has happened under Shelton.
We disagree on the Cruz play last night, but one thing I think we can agree on, is under Shelton's regime, this constant lack of communication between infielders/outfielders on those pop flies has been played over and over again, yet nothing ever seems to get rectified.
Derek Shelton is managing this team like he's managing Bradenton. When is he going to wake up and realize he's supposed to be in charge of guys who know how to play the game?
I anticipate an early/mid season firing next year of Shelton, because seeing this stuff makes me think it's not going to stop, and at some point the embarrassing plays that just keep happening with this team have to be stopped.
I'd bench Hayes and make him watch from the bench for the next 4 games. He'll see two opponents in playoff chases, and maybe he'll learn something from seeing how they do things on the field.
Surg, we think alike. Shelton has to demand that the players he is managing get their shit together on communication on plays. You would think that Newman would be able to lead the kids into learning that.
