Damn...5 million for him? Wow. I wish I could hit .140 and play good defense.
Re: Pirates Sign Pérez
$5 million shows the Pirates wanted him badly.
Re: Pirates Sign Pérez
The signing of Perez for this amount also reinforces that the trade of Stallings was made because of the return the Bucs received. Perez will be earning twice what Stallings would have made, and is not as good.
Re: Pirates Sign Pérez
Seems like a lot for him. Good defense and strong arm. Gold Glove winner 2019, 2020. Led AL with 41% caught stealing in 2019. That was the year he had the most playing time and hit .239 with 24 HRs. If he can come close to those numbers and be strong behind the plate it will be a good signing. Stallings' last 2 seasons were .248 and .246 without much power. But Stallings was so good behind the plate his hitting was a bonus. Perez doesn't have to hit a lot but he needs to do better than his last 2 seasons of .165 and .149.
Re: Pirates Sign Pérez
Also, the Bucs will now need to make another roster move. The countdown is on regarding who goes. Because the Bucs have now taken on $5 mil in salary, it seems like it will have to be one of Kuhl or Newman. Hanhold, Ponce, Underwood and others make too close to the minimum.

Ponce was released yesterday so he could play overseas. So a roster move is not necessary.

Re: Pirates Sign Pérez
One more thing, the pending demise of the CBA sure has lit a fire under BC to make moves while he can. Hard to believe he would have offered up $5 mil to Perez so quickly after the Stallings trade if the freeze on transactions was not looming overhead so soon.
Re: Pirates Sign Pérez
Oops. I was unaware of the Ponce transaction.

So if some fans felt the trade was a salary dump, it was actually not. As you say, the trade was made for the return the Bucs received.
