Who would be a good pickup to Play 3rd if Kang fails
Walker is from Pittsburgh, loves Pittsburgh (the city) and the fans. I can see him wanting to come back in spite of any hard feelings between him and management. I don't see them paying him unless they move some salary. I'd take him over David Freese at this point due to his defensive versatility, assume his health is not a concern.

I'd take Todd Frazier over a combined Freeze and Walker. It's time to move forward and get better.

It's very possible that they won't be paying McCutchen for the full season. Also, bringing back the hometown favorite could be seen as a strategy to appease the fanbase who will be upset if/when Cutch is dealt.

Very good point on the potential Cutch/Walker connection.

I hope this isn't serious. Kang isn't American. Those three from uCLA better get suspended.
Maybe Trump can buy the Pirates. That would help more and certainly be entertaining.
Part of me was hoping that a few days in a chinese prison would put some humility into those guys
Me too. If there is a more arrogant individual in sports today than LaVar Ball, I've yet to see him. For him to write this off as "no big deal,"...I bet he wouldn't say it's "no big deal" if three kids walked into Foot Locker and stole $2,000 worth of his "Big Baller" shoes.
Personally, I don't follow the NBA, and won't follow college basketball until March (it's what I do to get me from the end of football season to opening day of MLB). But, I've had just about enough of the Ball family.

Here's the relevant quote from the article, at least to me.
"We'll get to a point in the offseason where we've got to plan without Kang, then if he is able to get into the country, that's a bonus for us. If he doesn't get in, then we haven't lost anything," Huntington said. "The Rodriguez acquisition in the first week of August played a role in that. … Sean will have a baseball offseason, and we're looking forward to that. A big part of the acquisition of Sean was Plan B, in case Kang wasn't able to get into the country."
I knew it! Rodriguez was never intended to be help for a quasi-pennant race. He was, is, and will be going forward insurance in case Kang either can't come back, or can't play (both of which are equally likely at this point in time, as far as I'm concerned). The Pirates never had any intention of addressing third base. If Kang comes back, great, if not, hey...we've already taken care of that!
This team is going to be lucky to win 75 games next year. They aren't even trying to hide the fact that they aren't even trying anymore! (Yes, that sentence is grammatically correct English...reread it.)

Here's one more gold nugget for you.
"We don't sit here desperate to go find a fourth outfielder," Huntington said. "If there's a player that makes us better out there and fits what we're trying to do, then we'll take a look."
So, coming off a year where the team literally played half the season with two outfielders on the roster, and parts with only one, our GM thinks it's a good idea to AGAIN not have a true fourth outfielder on the team? I revise my statement in the above post...this team is going to lose 100. Mark it down.
Fans need to boycott. I'm totally serious. The only thing this regime understands is money.

Of course, I suppose we really shouldn't be surprised. We are talking about the same team that two years ago thought it would be smart to only have four starting pitchers on the roster (well, ok...3.5 starting pitchers).
Only the Pittsburgh Pirates would try to field a Major League Baseball team with no third baseman, no fourth outfielder, heck no third outfielder, and not a full starting rotation. But hey, at least they tried these ideas in different years...imagine what would happen if they tried them all together. :-/

I wish I knew what the Pirates were trying to do.
I hope this is just GM talk and protecting the current players. No GM wants to come out and say they need a 3B and an Outfielder when they have players (Rodriguez, Freese, Moroff, Luplow, and Osuna) already on the team.

Dude, you know what they're trying to do. They're trying to, as usual, take the absolute cheapest route possible. The rules say you have to have nine players on the field at the same time. Oh, they're going to abide by those rules, cause Nutting actually has to field a team to bring in the $$$. But good players? Players that give the team a chance to win each night? Rules don't say anything about that. So, use a guy like Vogelsong in the rotation? Sure! Why not? Have two outfielders? No problem! We'll just put our converted catcher/back-up first baseman out there! What could possibly go wrong? Third base? We've got a third baseman! He was a GG finalist! Nevermind the fact that he couldn't hit his way out of a paper bag!
The Pirates remind me of some of my students. They do just enough to pass. They have to turn something in, so they do...but as a teacher, I can tell who is trying and who isn't, who put in the work, and who threw something together piecemeal at the last possible moment. My students' corresponding grades reflect this.
Likewise, the Pirates coming 90-100 loss team will reflect the fact that their owner and GM really don't give a rip about fielding the best team possible. How much you want to bet that if they totaled up what they AREN'T paying Kang, and what they will be paying Freese and Rodriguez, it could yield a fairly decent player?
