Maybe you are right. Hopefully, Huntington knows more than us right now. I would think he is in the loop of what is going on.

"According to stipulations set forth in the Collective Bargaining Agreement, participation in an alcohol treatment program could help ease whatever punishment Kang faces in 2017. It’s not clear yet whether the arrest will affect his visa eligibility when he tries to return for the 2017 season, though Pirates’ GM Neal Huntington expects that Kang will report to spring training later this month."

Here is the mlbtr note from today on Kang's situation --

"Pirates infielder Jung Ho Kang will stand trial on DUI charges on February 22nd, Jee-ho Yoo of Yonhap reports. That’s after the start of Pittsburgh’s spring camp, though it seems the trial itself won’t pose any major limitations on his availability. There are much broader concerns here, of course. Kang is obviously in need of a reevaluation of his decisionmaking — it’s his third such arrest — and it remains to be seen what kind of disciplinary and/or remedial action he might face from the court (if not also the commissioner’s office)."



The 'though it seems the trial itself won’t pose any major limitations on his availability' part seems to support Dog's suggestion that the trial will not be what we think of as a trial, but more as a court appearance, perhaps for entry of some negotiated plea.

It also sounds like Korean news doesn't foresee a problem with his visa status.

Kang at some point needs to get it together. Hopefully this helps him get over what problems he has. The guy is running out of chances here if he continues to do stupid stuff like he has been doing the last year or so.

Apparently Frank Coonelly (sp?) issued a statement this morning on Kang which included, "...it is probable that he will have a trial in Korea on the DUI-related charges on February 22. It is not known how long the trial will last or when any sentencing phase that might be necessary would be scheduled."



That sounds a lot like what we call a trial and does not sound like any deal is in place at this point. There was no comment on Korean law, on issues such as mandatory minimum sentences. Any sort of jail time would seriously affect his future.
