I think it's a big benefit to how the team has decided to roster-build the last few years, splitting say two different starting positions among three players and so on.  Besides helping with that Player Rest metric or whatever it is they're working on, it probably also helps soften the blow from a loss from player injury (and suspension/whatver). 



I do wonder if the team would have taken a "re-do" and re-signed Sean Rodriguez if they knew. 
Yeah but S-Rod may miss most of the season after shoulder surgery.




True, given a double-do-over they probably would have undone their re-do and been done with it.

I was thinking the knock on Hanson was his range, not his arm? I could be wrong though. He actually had a couple of nice outfield assists the other day.

Rodriguez did sign early. The Pirates tried to sign him. I assume he wanted to start. The Pirates certainly didn't know about Kang in November if they did nothing in February or March to replace him.

I don't have a lot of confidence in Freese. He had a good year in 2016 (which was better than his three previous years - at least by OPS).



He also struck out 142 times and his previous high was 124.



He is a good back up, maybe good platoon player (had 963 ops versus lefties last year and 710 vs. righthanders) but I would hope he doesn't have to get more than 350 or so at bats.

AFAIK he has a good arm and good range. His problems appear to be from the neck up, at least at short. He seems to just lose his focus.

I may not be remembering this right but I thought some "experts" did not think he had the arm to stay at short stop. Some disagreed and thought his arm was fine. It turned out, it was his focus that seemed to be the issue. I do not recall range being an issue.

Arm is weak for short and boots routine plays. 2b, he's been good, as far as I've heard
