Super Nova or a flameout?

People don't want salary relief, they want payroll to go up. I would give Nova another year. He might not be a top line stopper or Cy Young candidate, but he is still average to better than average.

Are the young guys who would replace him better? I don't know that answer. Overall, he is pretty close to his career norms.

Career-wise Nova may be average. But he has gotten so bad in the 2nd half of the season that he's not even usable. Since 7/18, he is 1-7 with a 6.89 ERA and .315 BA against. And that's with our pitching guru. Will he bounce back next year? That's a tough question to answer. If I could find a trade partner without bribing them with prospects for the next Drew Hutchison, I'd jump at it.

So what's different with him? There just has to be a middle road between being better than any of us have a right to expect and worse.

I definitely agree with this.  Pencil him in as back of the rotation and move forward.   When I say move forward, I'm of course referring to acquiring another quality starting pitcher

Nova has red flags and he always did. Maybe he improves maybe he doesn't. He has shown over long stretches that he can pitch up and be a quality starter. So roll with it for 2019 and find another quality, mid-rotation starter.

Don't depend on Nova being a 3.50 ERA guy.
