Gerrit Cole has more Quality Starts than any other Pirates' Pitcher in their first 100 starts. Cole has 70.

I found that be pretty impressive considering some of the great Pirates' pitchers on the list.

(Root Sports put up the stat after his start on Monday)

I hope he soon gets some run support because his last few starts have been very good, but he has nothing in the win column to show for his work.

ok just looked up some info

started in 1985 but was fairly easy to retroactively back track and assess pitchers from pre 1985 from data, so we can compare to all pitchers.

here are top 10 all time as a % of all starts.

All-Time[edit]

As of the end of the 2014 Major League Baseball (MLB) season, the highest "quality start" percentage for a given season in the live-ball era (post-1920) was recorded by Greg Maddux, who had 24 of them in 25 games in 1994. Dwight Gooden was 33-for-35 in 1985.

Since 1921, and through the 2014 MLB season, the overall leaders by percentage (min. 100 starts):

Clayton Kershaw (148 of 209, 70.8%)

Tom Seaver (454 of 647, 70.2%)

Adam Wainwright (152 of 217, 70%)

Mel Stottlemyre (247 of 356, 69.4%)

Félix Hernández (207 of 303, 68.3%)

Bob Gibson (328 of 482, 68%)

David Price (123 of 181, 68%)

Jered Weaver (179 of 265, 67.5%)

Spud Chandler (123 of 184, 66.8%)

Randy Johnson (403 of 603, 66.8%)

jered weaver eh???

surprised that Roy Halladay is not on that list

It is an easy stat to go back and look at over the years. There were some old names on that list.

Cole is at 70% at his career. That might put him at the top of the active list. I wouldn't have guessed that.

It also pointed out that the Pirates have had some good pitchers, but never a great one during their entire career. A bunch of good seasons or just a few years as a Pirate.

Speaking of QS, Bob Walk often makes a great point. The rule for a QS is no less than 6 IP and no more than 3 ER. So a pitcher who does exactly that has an ERA of 4.50 for the game. A pitcher who goes 9 innings giving up 4 ERs does not get a QS because he exceeds the 3 ER limit. However his ERA for that game is lower at 4.00. The QS criteria really needs to be changed.

I understand, not a great way to see how good of a start, but I still like the stat. It shows how pitchers keeps their team in the game.

Anywhere know where Cole ranks counting past 2014?

There's something much more complicated called a TQS (true quality start) but I am too lazy to look it up and learn about it. Just an FYI in case someone else wants to.
