Derek Holland interested about signing with Pittsburgh

Post by fjk090852-7 »

MLB Trade Rumors said that Holland has interest in signing with Pirates. He is a lefty who may return to his successful form of a couple years ago. He may be worth a short to sign along with another lefty who is a free agent Tommy Millone. If Pittsbugh could sign them to reasonable contracts it might be the way to go to add pitching depth since guys like Nova appear to want big money and several years.

The Bucs Dugout article doesn't make him sound too promising --

He wants to resign in texas. Let Texas resign him. He hasn't been good or healthy for three years. However, he fits the mold of what Pittsburgh is trying to do - reclamation project.

I actually would very much like to bring Holland in. I've always thought he was an underrated arm. Obviously, I hope that isn't ALL they do, but it's a start. I also saw this morning that Nova's agent was saying they were getting offers similar to what Happ received last year. If that's the case, the Pirates should be all over that, especially since there's mutual interest there. I could live with a rotation of Cole, Taillon, Nova, Holland, and Glasnow/Kuhl/Hutchison/whomever.

The fact that Nova hasn't accepted any of those Happ-like offers suggests he's holding out for something more in his originally stated 5 years, 70MM demand. How close to that should NH go?

It sounds like Holland is interested in anyone who wants to sign him. He made $10 million last year. Was he just bought out of that contract?

I'd rather sign Nova for a few million more. Nova should be pressured if he is getting offers in the $12 million range.

Still pretty early in the process.

Bartolo Colon getting $12.5 million might be bad for the Pirates. Yeah, he had another solid season but he is 43 years old.

R.A. Dickey only (only) got $7.5 million, but did have his worst season in Toronto. Dickey is 42 years old.

As to Dickey's age, you would think it wouldn't affect a knuckleball pitcher (Hoyt Wilhelm retired at age 46, while his knuckleball was working fine, because he was concerned about reacting to line drives up the middle). But I guess Dickey's knuckleball was thrown harder and was more an ancillary pitch for him. It will be interesting to see how he does. Atlanta could bring in a few old knuckleballers to give him advice.

And I see Hellickson accepted the 17.2 QO from the Phils. I don't know what that says about other pitchers, but it must mean his agent thought his chances next year wouldn't be much worse, and the 17.2 was too good to pass up.
