What a joke that is. He's a real difference maker. Reminds me of a cartoon I saw as a kid. KC used to be little more than a farm team for the Yankees. Players like Maris , Shanty and Lopez were plucked from KC for very minimal returns. This was in the 50's. The cartoon showed KC pulling a grungy , scraggly guy out of a garbage can and saying "wow , a 2nd baseman !" Not quite the same but where are you going when you hear of other contenders going after big difference makers and then see we are hoping to get milage out of guy whose left arm and shoulder has been through the mill.

Hmmm...he is coming from the Yankees?? And he made $12 million last year. Don't people want high priced players from high salaried teams who won a playoff game in 2017?

No. Seriously. We want upgrades that may or may not cost more than the players they are replacing, but, generally speaking, will. The keyword though is "upgrade." Who, exactly, is Garcia and his 5-10, 4.41 ERA, and 1.41 WHIP an upgrade over?
Dog, here's the point...generally speaking, better players will cost more money. If the Pirates fork out, say, a 2/15 deal for Garcia, it will be such a typical Pirates move. Instead of upping the anti just a bit more, and going 3/30 or 3/40 for a guy who might actually be an upgrade, they'll go out and sign a guy like Garcia precisely to say that they signed someone. Rather than offer an upgrade, Garcia might actually be a downgrade over someone like Williams, or Kuhl, or, heck, even Glasnow.
We're tired of this kind of stuff. Last year it was Hudson. The year before that it was Vogelsong. Common theme among these guys? None are difference makers. If Garcia surprises me and delivers like 13-15 Liriano, or 14 Volquez, or 12-13, 15 Burnett, I'll happily eat crow. But, Rob Biertempfel tweeted today that many are saying the big splash the Pirates make will be signing an assistant pitching coach. If that's our "big splash" this offseason, next year is lost before the first pitch is thrown.
It's like they aren't even trying to hide the fact that they aren't even trying anymore. The way I see it, in an ideal world, one of two things would happen. Either, the Pirates would start operating like a real Major League Baseball team, or Bob Nutting would sell to someone who is willing to do that. Unfortunately, for the foreseeable future, Option C--none of the above--seems to be the course of action.

He's a FA and probably won't be too expensive.

That might not upgrade the rotation much but probably would make the pen look a lot better.

Even if Garcia is signed, he wouldn't be penciled in as a starter. He would be a typical move that not just the Pirates make, but one every team makes. Garcia has been in the league for the last seven years. I am sure he will be somewhere again in 2018.
To me Garcia would be a long relief guy. I am not saying I want Garcia, but people want the payroll to increase but with only star players. I am just pointing out that every team signs a Garcia. The Brewers and Royals are said to be interested too (this is actually old news).
I want quality, as I hope most do too. Too many people (not just this board) cry payroll and say "typical Pirates move" knowing that every team makes the same moves. Garcia is the type of guy that gets 3/30 or 3/40.

Every team does make those kind of moves. Only the Pirates and a couple other teams count those moves as the highlight of their off season

Yeah, I think we'd be better with him than without, but not better enough

This is just sabre rattling...The Pirates have been known for missing the mark for years. Remember under David Littlefield's term when PNC Park was opened and the big offseason acquisition was Terry Muholland. A good pitcher in his prime, but not the pitcher to get a team who won 62 games into the playoffs. Our club has talent. It appears the so called Best Front Office Team in Baseball is missing the mark. Darn it, I wish we had folks running this club who knew what it takes to win...add some power to the left side of the infield, a lefty in the pen, a leader to the rotation and a good backup OF to spell Marte, Cutch and Polanco...But instead we surmise on adding Jamie Garcia and an assistant pitching coach...Geez Louise....

That was the gist of my thread.
