Sale of the Marlins
With the pending sale of the Marlins I was thinking they might be a good team to trade with this offseason. The Marlins may want to shed salary so possibly a player like Yelich or even Dee Gordon would be good fits for Pittsburgh. Yes the Bucs would be taking on salary, but possibly they could shed some as well if they would move Marte and if they decide to trade Cutch. The Bucs need to add some offense to go along with some of the young pitchers.

I like you're thinking. They've got some real potential in the rotation, so much so that I now would keep Cole (not so long ago I advocated trading him for the significant return, because I saw no point in carrying him).
I'd resign Cutch (I know, I know...) and look to trade either Marte or Polanco (or both) and Nova. I'd place Osuna and Meadows in winter ball. I'd be looking for another dependable OF and one high end starter. The Marlins would be a good place to be calling.
The development of Bell, the rebound of Cutch, the potential of Diaz and then the potential of the joung pitchers all give me a hope I did not have two months ago. They could be very very good. BUT...they have to FINISH THE TEAM!!!
The same darn place we were in 2015. FINISH THE TEAM!
What I want to see is something bold. Major trades

The lack of any effort to finish the team these past 2 off seasons as well as this entire season has been so blatant that it makes me wonder if something is up. The priority is clearly on keeping expenses down even to the point of ignoring obvious needs. That agenda is counterproductive to running a baseball franchise but could be useful if looking for a buyer. It's hard to imagine that after 2 years if sparse FO activity, they will suddenly change their ways next year and try to fill their needs to make the kind of run at the post-season that requires more than a sub-.500 record. After following their 98-win season with 2 years of apparent disinterest, I don't know what would motivate this FO to wake up and get back in the game.

You're making the point that I've been trying to make, probably ineffectively, for some time: the actions over the past couple years don't make sense, even for a tight owner. Either, there has been a terrible miscalculation by Nutting (or possibly bad advice). That's why I hold out the thinnest of hopes that we might get surprised this off season. If this winter repeats the past than I'm at a total loss as to what the heck he's doing and a sale might be in the not so distant future.

It seems to me that Nutting has set a budget limit, based at least in part of receipts, but one that is a dollar limit, not player limit. That is, NH can spend the money however he likes but can't go over the limit. Several years ago he had a pretty young team, with a lot of the talent making the minimum or slightly above that. That group has largely moved into the arb years and the payroll to keep them goes up - it costs more to just stay even. This means a drop-off in the surrounding pieces. I fully expect to see some of the more expensive players traded off with the thought of replacing them with less costly versions, which may free up budget dollars for better surrounding pieces. I do not see a sale - if a sale were in mind, Nutting would want to make the team look good, even if it cost more.

No debt will help a sale of a team. I haven't heard much about that in a while. Are they still paying down the debt?

I think the Miami team are going to be very inclined to be buyers, not sellers. They will want to make a splash.

Not necessarily. He's fortunate that he can still claim to be in a pennant race this year despite the record. And a buyer would look at the overall franchise and what he might do as an owner and not just how they performed this year. A buyer might realize it wouldn't take a whole lot to add the missing pieces and make them legit contenders even if Nutting won't go that far.

Hopefully by some miracle Loria showed Nutting just how much he should sell and take profits now instead of holding this club and it's fans hostage while he bleeds us 20-40 million at a time each year.
We have no hope being run this way. KC and now Cleveland are following the normal small market model.
Miami did the same thing when they made two runs at championships.
There's nobody in baseball run like us, that I see. It was all just a bunch of BS all these years.
Twins model, then Rays model, then Royals... We follow whatever model spends light and when it comes or came time to follow that model into buying, we folded
Would be a turning point in this franchises now, not so awesome history to have him sell

I still haven't figured out if Nutting has become a fan and at least wants to win at some level or if he sees the Pirates as mostly a way to make money. It seems like it could be both but that is more difficult path.
