TOP 40 UPDATE 6/1
Here's a little look at how the top 40 is progressing this year, as of 6/1- just throwing some stats out, discuss...
I will probably not update this next month because there are already 3 players out (Glasnow, Bell, Webb), others who could be out soon (Williams, Osuna, Hansen?), not to mention those incoming draft picks. Plus the guys we didn't rank (Logan Hill and his 14 HR, Pedro Vasquez and his 1.97 ERA, Danny Ortiz, Johnny Barbato, John Bohrmann, Pat Light and the others who still qualify).
1 Austin Meadows 22 OF AAA.255/.311/.365, playing much better in May
2 Tyler Glasnow 23 SP DNQ
3 Josh Bell 24 1B/OF DNQ
4 Mitch Keller 21 SP 25 A+ 12.2 IP in May, back tightness
5 Kevin Newman 23 SS AAstruggling, average down from .270 to .225 AA
6 Ke'Bryan Hayes 20 A+ 3b batting average down, OBP up still very young
7 Nick Kingham 25 AAA very strong number-wise since coming back from injury
8 Cole Tucker 20 SS A+ Average went from .232 to .271, 27 SB

10 Will Craig 22 3B A+ average down slightly, OBP/SLUG up slightly
11 Steven Brault 25 SP (33.1 CAREER MLB INNINGS) ERA down over a run over the last month
12 Elias Diaz 26 C AAA 18 MLB AB, 12 THIS YEAR Deserves to be in the bigs, .281/.298/.388 Indy, plus glove
13 Alen Hanson 24 88 MLB CAREER AB designated for assignment, not good enough of a hitter to have no glove
14 Gage Hinsz, 21 SP A+ struggling big time, ERA up 2 runs in May
15 Yeudy Garcia 24 SP looking better ERA wise, still walking a lot
16 Edgar Santana 25 RP AAA if bullpen was a big need he'd be in the bigs, waiting to see what Jhan Marinez does
17 Clay Holmes 23 SP AAA 3.20 ERA, 10K/IP
18 Braeden Ogle 19 SP EXTENDED SPRING TRAINING
19 Jin-De Jhang 23 C 2 for 29 since injury

33 Brandon Waddell 22 SP AA coming back from injury made 6 starts, still young for AA
34 Adrian Valerio 19 SS A- .309/.356/.418 in May since back from injury

Thanks for the updates, psu. Any thoughts on who should takeover the spots of the guys who no longer qualify for the list?
Luplow's power surge is really encouraging. And some of the other second tier guys have had good starts too. Now, if they can keep it up while the top tier guys pick it up...

Entirely my 2 cents, but those I would consider who were not in the 40- you can consider guys like Chris Bostick, Danny Ortiz, Johnny Barbato or Pat Light, who have limited MLB experience; or for those in the minors, OF Logan Hill (14 HR/.939 OPS in a tough park at Bradenton), 1B Edwin Espinal (.282 at Altoona), 2B Trae Arbet (.282, 7 HR at WVP), 1B Carlos Munoz or 3B Hunter Owen (both .862 OPS at WVP), or C Christian Kelly (.306 at Bradenton). From the pitching side, I tend to discount minor league relievers, but just about the entire Altoona pen (especially Montana DuRupau) and SP Alex McRae (3.19 era), Bradenton P Pedro Vasquez (1.97 ERA, 10 BB/59.1 IP), WVP P Cam Vieaux (2.26 ERA). Plus in a week or so we'll have a pack of bright and shiny draft picks.

That's a good point. At least the nos. 1-3 or so would find their way into the list, you'd think.

I think Pedro Vazquez is the clear add to this list. I was high on Luplow after his first full season at WV, but then less so after his FSL stint. The way he has added power to his game is sort of the cookie cutter approach that organizations search for in a hitter. He hit 36 doubles in low-A, he's turned a lot of those doubles into home runs and has not increased his strike out rate at the plate. I think his bat will play, his glove limits him to a corner OF spot, but luckily it looks like corner OF spots could open up in the future at the MLB level.

yeah, his power and strike out rate are a nice combination.

I think you could easily update the rankings. When a guy loses eligibility he goes off the list and everyone move up one slot. The 40th guy is replaced by the second place winner in the final 40th player poll. Only thing is if the second place guy is seriously hurt and may not play anymore this season then you go to the next guy.

Had I thought of this earlier in the year I probably would have done that. Or even run another poll when a player lost eligibilty to see who should be the new #40, then bump everyone else up. Maybe I'll do that next year. But now with the draft a week away it's gonna be somewhat moot.

BTW, there was a 3 way tie for #41 between Erich Weiss, Montana DuRupau and Pat Light, so I think a new poll is the way to go next year.
