The other games 2025

Even at my age, I woke up with a hard on. The Mrs.
couldn't understand why. I told her, " honey, it's Opening
Day in Japan.Cubs vs. Dodgers . It's 3-1 Dodgers in the 6th",
She said, " good, now you won't have to buy Viagara"

Pirates' magic number is 162 to eliminate the Cubs!

Is it just me, or does the 2025 MLB season seem to come with an industry wide apathy towards the coming season? MLB Network has started up Quick Pitch spring training edition, but they changed the format and I hope it isn't a permanent change. They show replays of games all day. There's very little original content. They used to be wall to wall shows.

Here and over on Reddit, as well as on Facebook, there's very little discussion about the Pirates. On Reddit, I think every other thread is a form of Nutting sucks or sell the team type thread. The game day threads have little participation.

I'm wondering industry wide, that after the Dodgers just went insane spending money, that every other team is pretty much conceding it all to them unless they catch lightning in a bottle. I don't see fans of ANY team other than the Dodgers that seem to have the usual over the top excitement for the coming season.

I don't see much in the way of promos on the networks that will carry MLB games. And everything seems to fall in this category of talk: Dodgers, Soto's contract, or star worship. There seems to be little in the way of any discussion about teams as a whole. When it does occur, especially on MLB Network, you'd swear they're saying every team has a chance, because every team has those guys that are looking for the bounce back year, or coming back from injury, etc. It's like a blueprint of commentary. Just interchange players and teams names. Nothing unique.

I'm watching spring training games, and listening to guys go on and on about the games the Orioles will wear all orange. I listened to some of the game tonight, and Bob Walk's most passionate discourse was the fact that all the Red Sox players wore their pants down to their ankles, and you couldn't see one pair of red socks on a team named the Red Sox.

I'm watching another game, and they're talking about new menu items.

This might be the least excitement I've seen to a coming season throughout all of baseball that I can ever recall.

I don’t know if it’s industry wide or not, but the Pirates market the team toward the casual fan. The announcers are there both to describe the action and to provide entertainment. They are on camera just about every inning and often for lengthy periods of time. They’re either trying to provide comedy (Greg Brown) or pontificating on a variety of subjects (Joe Block). If you are a hard-core fan, these broadcasts can be very annoying but if you’re just a casual fan who doesn’t care that much, it might be entertaining. I don’t pay much attention to other teams or the national media, but from what Surge is saying, maybe this isn’t so unique to the Pirates. Maybe it’s becoming an industry wide strategy.

I can only speak as a Pirates fan regarding the upcoming season and the excitement that comes with it. If I were a fan of one of the big market teams, I'm sure I'd be more excited than I am now about the Pirates getting ready to start the season. Those big market teams are in a different league as far as I see it.

It's mostly because the Pirates lack two things, in my view, that dampen my excitement: the temerity of the owner in trying not to win and an everyday super star-type player. The club is done before it starts. Combine that with what the large market teams do in the offseason and there's little hope for Pirates fans to see even a winning season let alone a spot in the playoffs. Some fans have lowered their expectations to truly sad depths to excuse what takes place here and, worse, have become numb to it.

It's easy to blame the owner. He's directly in charge of the Pirates. But I've said before that the number one culprit is Major League Baseball, more specifically, the big market owners. They have no incentive to change the current system and have convinced the others it's in their best interests to continue the status quo.

My problem is that I love baseball so much that I can't break away from it. It's so deep within me that nothing can make me give it up or turn away. I'm hopelessly, pathetically, in love with it. It's comforting knowing, though, that I'm not alone, that there are many more out there just like me. Like all of you.

I went to a baseball card show this morning. Paul Skenes cards were all over the place. I just browse but it seemed like every other table had some sort of Skenes card on display. Didn't inquire about the prices though. This show was held in Braves country.

My enthusiasm for MLB has been waning for years. The total lack of legitimate impact bats on this team has been a part of that loss of excitement for the Pirates. As a kid I watched Clemente, Stargell, Oliver, Sanguillen, Hebner and even Bob Robertson and then later add Parker, Zisk, Madlock, Pena, and, a guy I loved Easler absolutely mash. I appreciate Reynolds but he wouldn’t have been a starter in 1971. I just can’t get by that lack.
I will say this year I was looking forward to seeing Skenes, Jones, Keller, and eventually the arrival of the young guns. I was hoping for exceptional pitching and double digit K’s from starters- a new excitement. But, one is down already. I’m fading again.
