Surprise!! Triolo wins the Gold Glove for the Utility position in the NL.
Not having seen the nominees in advance of today's GG announcement, this was a welcome surprise to see a Buc get a GG.
In other news, former Buc Carlos Santana wins the GG at first base in the American League. Equally surprising is the fact that it is the first GG of his long career.

Re: Jared Triolo
I think he won one in Triple A as a third baseman so the guy can play. Many speculated here last offseason that he'd be a fantastic utility guy and he's now proved it defensively. If he can improve his offense we have ourselves a really valuable player. On the other hand, it could give BC the option to deal Hayes for a young first baseman with power who's blocked in another organization, and make Triolo the regular third baseman.

Re: Jared Triolo
That's true. But it also makes it hard for the Pirates to rely on him, too. Either way, if he can't find a solution to his back issues, the Pirates will have to find his replacement.Wildwoodcoach wrote: ↑Mon Nov 04, 2024 12:12 pmHayes medical history might make it difficult to trade himDoc wrote: ↑Mon Nov 04, 2024 11:42 am I think he won one in Triple A as a third baseman so the guy can play. Re: Jared Triolo
The Pirates have no choice but to hold onto Hayes. He currently has zero trade value. He's a great defensive 3rd baseman who is a light hitter with little power and a chronic back problem that frequently keeps him off the field. A GM might take a flyer on him to see if he can both hit and stay healthy, but such a deal wouldn't net more than a low rated prospect since the team trading for him knows they might not be getting anything in return. Hayes has to stay healthy and play and hit to be either an asset to the Pirates or a player another team wants. If he rebounds and has a solid season, there's no point in trading him unless he increased his trade value to the point he could bring a good player in return. If he can't stay healthy (and there's always that possibility with a chronic back problem) then he'll probably never hit well and he may need to move into a utility infielder role.Doc wrote: ↑Mon Nov 04, 2024 12:25 pmThat's true. There's no basement in the Alamo.
Re: Jared Triolo
I agree that at this point he's untradeable. I was thinking along the lines that his back issue is resolved and he returns to being dependable with regard to playing everyday. That's taking a big leap of faith but it's the only way he'll return to being valuable for either the Pirates or another team.Bobster wrote: ↑Mon Nov 04, 2024 12:55 pmThe Pirates have no choice but to hold onto Hayes. I think Ke'Bryan has $43 million attached to him, through 2029?
