2017 payroll obligations

Post by Tintin »

Here is what I'm thinking 2017's team with payroll obligations looks like. I'm guessing on some salaries. Please correct if you have insight or knowledge I don't.

Cervelli 9m

Stewart 1.5m

Jaso 4

Harrison 7.75

Mercer 3m (arbitration, clueless on this one)

Kang 2.75

Cutch 14.25

Marte 5.33

Polanco 1.5

8 starters and Stewart 49 million

Cole 5m (see Mercer)

Tallion .6

Hutchison 2.2 (no idea)

Glasnow .6

Kuhl or Brault .6

Starters 9 million

Watson 5 (see Cole and Mercer)

Bastardo 6.5

Rivero .6

Schugel .6

Caminero or other rookie .6

Pen 13.3 million. I chose not to bring Hughes back. Feliz and Nicasio probably won't return.

Frazier .6

Bell .6

Bench 1.2 million Frese and Joyce will not return. I thought about putting SRod on at 3.5 million because we all know it's happening.

I'm at 72.5 million accounting for 21 players. I'm light two bench players and 2 bullpen guys.

2017 payroll obligations

This is from the team site:

"Shortly before that unexpected deal, Pittsburgh returned left-hander Jonathon Niese to the Mets for lefty reliever Antonio Bastardo and cash..."

I don't know how much we got back from the Mets as I haven't seen it reported. But I don't think we'll owe Bastardo the full $6.5M.

I was thinking that without having to pay another year of Melancon at around $10M and without Liriano at $13M that was almost 25% of this years' team salary which has been reported really close to $100M. I think that makes your guesstimate look pretty close.

So taking a look at all of that there is really no excuse in the world for the Pirates to not add payroll to the Major League roster next season, and go out and sign at least one maybe even two above average starting pitchers that can help this team win.

That should be the plan.

I also think a trade could happen to bring in someone too.

Come on Freddy, there wasn't any legitimate excuse not to do the same thing this year and it didn't happen.  They didn't even try. Took a waiver on a bullpen pitcher (nicasio) and a washed up never has been (vogelsong). Why would it be any different? They were similarly situated with payroll.
