If I remember correctly he had a hamate bone injury similar to what Cervelli has and remember reading that it is rare for the strength in the hand to return completely thus reducing the home run power to almost nil. Cant remember who long ago Cota had his injury so maybe modern surgery has changed the out come. Catching position may well be a 0 home run position!

In 2012, Nick Markakis also had that injury. From 2007-2011 he had 23, 20, 18, 12 and 15 HRs. After the injury, he had 10, 14, 3 and 11. Definitely a drop in power.

The reports I was seeing when someone else had the surgery was a definite loss in power for about a year. Maybe there's hope for next year.

When did Cervelli hurt this bone? I thought it was more mid season-ish. He had no HRs before either.

I really hope and think Cervelli is just having a down year. He has been dinged up all year, always arguing with the umpires (unusual for a catcher). Like it is an "everyone is against me" approach. I am not worried about Cervelli going forward.

You should be worried about Cervelli. He has produced virtually nothing at the plate, does not drive in runs in key situations, and has had a terrible year throwing out runners
