Plus power kid. Good arm . Was a first baseman in HS but Pirates trying to utilize his arm. Playing OF and first in GCL.

2017 17th rounder that played in state of Washington. Just turned 18. Turned down offer from Gonzaga saying very close call...

30 AB's 12 hits 5 HR.

Impressive to say the least. Started off 0-7 with 5 k's. Clearly he didn't get discouraged.

Why was he drafted so late? He was also ranked #5 by a few publications in the state of Washington on draft day.

5 hrs in 30 ab's for an 18 year old is nothing to sneeze at. Pretty unusual ?

Maybe some of it is he looks to be a first baseman. But has a plus arm and Pirates are going to give him opportunity in RF. But the fact that he played in a cold weather state may have also pushed him down. Some publications had him around number 500 , so 17th round is in line with that.

I think it's really hard to scout players when they're outside normal baseball hotbeds, especially high school kids. This Martin guy had all the makings of a kid that would go to college, Pirates may have lucked out that he wanted to sign as opposed to play collegiate ball. Looks like they've netted a legit power hitting prospect, he should fly up their prospect rankings.

Another interesting GCL prospect:

This kid also just turned 18 out of the DR. Playing SS, he's listed at 6'0 170Lbs, guessing he might grow out of SS. Either way, the Low A WV squad is going to exciting to watch next year.

Do you get an extra pick for every kid that doesn't sign the following year or just the higher rounds?

With the slotting now, why not take a chance on these college bound kids. I hated going to class and would even hate getting up earlier to practice and then go to class. Maybe I can be that negotiator to tell kids to skip school and play baseball?
