Kang to miss the start of spring training

I expect Kang back before too long. I doubt there will be any discipline from the Pirates or MLB. I'm wondering if any player has ever been disciplined by MLB for an infraction that occurred in another country and was handled by that country's legal system. I can't think of any.

I know that in January 2011 Alfredo Simon was charged with shooting and killing a man and wounding another in the Dominican Republic and was pitching for the Orioles by May.

In December 2004 Sidney Ponson was jailed for assault in Aruba but pitched for the Orioles in 2005. After several DUIs in the states, Baltimore released him and cited the morals clause of his contract due to his multiple arrests to void the contract and avoid paying him. But the union grieved it and the Orioles had to pay the contract.

As far as I know, Kang's record in the states is clean with the Chicago incident as yet unresolved. Considering what Simon and Ponson got away with in other countries with no MLB discipline, I can't imagine Kang has any type of suspension awaiting him.

I think Kang will get at least a 25 game suspension from MLB. I get the impression that MLB has withheld suspension at this point, because why bother suspending the guy if he can't even get his visa.

On what grounds?

We have seen domestic violence be a reason for a suspension. Very recent. But many players have got a DUI. I don't know if three DUIs can be a reason.

I just think the Union will be all over it. You might be right, but history is not on your side.

Who's the last MLB player to get a DUI? What precedent is there? Even there, I don't know what language is in the new CBA on this. Professional sports in general are taking a more serious approach to their players being portrayed as role models (highly so, IMO).

The NFL, for instance, has cracked down on domestic violence cases. Joe Mixon didn't even get an invite to the combine.

Obviously, there has been a crackdown on PEDs.

All I'm saying is that if we're going off the "old" precedent, that may not be sufficient. It will be very bad for MLB's image to NOT suspend a player for a DUI.

Theory - he's appealing because of visa issues.

The last I heard he was waiting on visa. Then the Pirates action and now Kang. We think he's automatic because he plays baseball. An ordinary citizen (which is all he is in the eyes of immigration) would probably have serious problems obtaining a visa if his last visit to the States resulted in unresolved criminal charges and then the criminal verdict in Korea.

This is just a guess, but I've said before and thank it even more likely now that a criminal conviction in Korea may prevent him from returning to the states.

Something is going on...

I understand what you are saying. I am just saying it hasn't happened in the past.

It is two weeks today that Kang's sentence came down, and still not a trace of him at Bradenton. We are a little over two weeks from opening day and the way the visa matter is going I would be surprised to see Kang in a game before the last week of April.

He is a veteran. He might not need that many reps in minor league games to get him going. I sure hope he doesn't miss all of April. And he better be in shape and working out.

If they begin the season without Kang, and are winning games without him as they are doing now I would leave him at AAA until they think they need him. The Pirates say they are going to do everything to help him to recover from any alcohol problem, but in my opinion this maybe his final year with the Bucs. They may attempt to move him next offseason.
