Heaney another shaky outing. Same with Mayza.

Three guys battling to make the roster each have two hits today: Bae, Suwinksi, and Davis. The old guard, Pham and Cutch have the Bucs other two hits.

The team offensively might appear to be doing well, they're 10th in runs scored right now. But recently, as teams are sending out fewer NRI and players are starting to face actual major leaguers, the Pirates are resembling their usual selves. Lots of guys LOB, poor hitting with RISP.
0-7 today
0-5 Tuesday
0-2 Monday (Home SS game started by Skenes) and 2-9 (Road SS game started by Falter)
1-11 Sunday
8-21 Saturday
1-7 Friday

That's a .193 BA with RISP, which is awful in it's own right, let alone being skewered by the 8-21 day.

Pirates lose today 2-1. Keller dominant in 3 IP. Bednar, Santana, Ferguson all had scoreless innings. Bucs 2-10 RISP. They even had a bases loaded, no outs situation, Gonzales struck out and Triolo lines into a double play. Three hits in the inning, no runs. They seem to be rounding into midseason form.

The Bucs also struck out 14 times.

What of Horwitz? There's been no real update. Originally it was he'd be playing ST games, and probably ready for opening day. Now, all I can find is he's fielding, throwing, and hitting soft toss.

No word yet on Jones. It's like BOOM! JONES ELBOW!! And nothing since. I find this hard to believe there's been no update of any sort.

So I'm looking over the 40 man roster, and who the 26 guys might be heading north. If you look at the pitchers, there are 14 right now who are not injured or have already been sent to the minors.

It's clear these pitchers will be with the Bucs to start the season: Skenes, Keller, Heaney, Falter, Ferguson, Mlodzinski, Holderman, Bednar, Nicolas, Santana, Mayza. That leaves 2 spots for these 3 guys: Wentz, Lawrence, Strzelecki. None of them have an option. Borucki has pitched well as a NRI, and seen a lot of action. Lawrence has only appeared in three games, and was a waiver pickup this spring. Carson Fulmer is a NRI and has made a start and 6 appearances.

I think Jones ends up on the 60 day IL, Fulmer is added to the 40 man and makes the starting rotation, Lawrence and Strzelecki/Wentz is DFA, Strzelecki/Wentz go to Miami, and Borucki takes a spot on the 40 and can be sent to Indy. So there's my 13 pitchers: Skenes, Keller, Heaney, Falter, Fulmer, Ferguson, Mlodzinski, Holderman, Bednar, Nicolas, Santana, Mayza, and Wentz/Strzelecki.

The postion guys, these most certainly are going to Miami: McCutchen, Reynolds, Pham, Bart, Triolo, Frazier, Gonzales, Hayes, Cruz, Kiner-Falefa. That leaves 3 spots for these guys on the 40 man who haven't been reassigned to the minors already: Suwinski, Bae, Cook, Yorke, Palacios, Rodriguez, Davis.
Davis went 0-3 with 3K's as DH against Boston tonight, and I think he's headed to Indy, and Rodriguez is the back up catcher.

Palacios has no more options, and the fact he hasn't done anything with an outfield spot just ripe for the taking is telling. Add Cook and Yorke to that as well, plus with a chance of playing first base for them. Those two have all their options, so I see them both packing for Indy. I see Palacio being DFA, and more than likely clears waivers, and accepts a minor league assignment. Suwinski can play all three outfield spots, and has hit okay this spring. Bae has hit very well this spring, can play the outfield and infield. Suwinski only has one more option, and I think the Bucs would love to hang on to that if possible. I see them both making the team based upon their versatility, their performance this spring. When and if Horwitz is ever ready again, I think Bae will be the odd man out, until Frazier is dumped mid-season, if not earlier.

So there's my 13 position players: Cutch, Reynolds, Pham, Bart, IKF, Gonzales, Triolo, Frazier, Hayes, Cruz, Rodriguez, Bae, Suwinski.

Just glanced at the Pirates MLB Site and looked at the current roster and Cook, Yorke and Davis all show in minors. There have not been any announcements regarding to roster assignments today, but it sure appears some players have been optioned to Indy. Also it appears Palacios is no longer on the 40 man roster.

I just checked the transaction page and the first three players I mentioned have been sent to Indy, and Palacios has been designated for assignment. Appears Bae is coming north unless the Pirates acquire someone before Opening Day.

I hope they’re sending Davis to Indy just to give him at bats so that he’s ready to move into the DH role sometime during this season. My fear is that McCutchen will bring very little to the offense. His time is over, the future with guys like Davis is here. A crappy offseason is turning into a crappy start to the regular season.

I’m pretty much in line with the roster discussion above with just a couple changes. I don’t think Davis has anything else to prove in AAA and he was the strongest defensive catcher this spring. I can’t for the life of me understand why the Pirates did not use Endy at 1B this spring when he has played 45 games there in the minors. I thought both Endy and Davis should go North. Bae and Suwinski had exceptional Springs and are both versatile. So I agree with including them. Frazier should never have been signed and does not improve the roster. He should be DFA’d
As far as the pitching, Borucki deserves to come North. It’s looking like Harrington may take Jones spot which I am OK with. No way do I put Fulmer on the starting rotation. I already have my reservations with Falter and Heaney

Regarding Palacios:
Too bad he had a poor ST.
I hope he either gets a chance with another team or is not claimed and can remain in the Pirates organization. He is a good dude!
