Padres and Angels have a scheduled off day today. Very strange for a Sunday.

I think Possum mentioned this before- Next year the Pirates don't play on a Sunday and it's the 4th of July. Really unusual

Not playing baseball on the Fourth of July should be unconstitutional.

It is nearly as bad as not eating turkey on Thanksgiving.

And it should be a doubleheader. And I am not talking about a day-night or one where you have to buy a ticket for each game. It should be a true doubleheader with just the amount of time for the starting pitchers to get warmed up and the grounds crew to prep the playing field.

Five series starting tonight pitting playoff hopefuls against each other in various scenarios:

The Loo at Cincy-After seeing the Pirates go 2-15 to start the month of August, The Loo must have been licking their chops with 7 games against the Pirates, who the Cards swept in three games previously in August. The Pirates have shaken off the TDL blues apparently, and took 4 of 7 from the Cards as the Pirates have gone 6-4 since. The pressure on The Loo in this series is enormous because of those 4 losses, but if they come out and take the first game, I think they shake it off and put it back on the Reds.

Red Sox at Rays- The Rays started with a 5 game lead, saw it drop only to 2.5 once, and now even better at 6 games over the Yankees, withstanding a Yankees charge of 13 game winning streak, countering with a current streak of 7. The Red Sox sort of treaded water to float back into the WC2 spot while Oakland floundered with a 6 game losing streak. The Rays did not lose focus, sweeping the Orioles as expected. Sox took 2 of 3 from Cleveland. These two play each other 7 times starting with a 4 game set tonight.

Brewers at Giants- A 4 game set, the last time they meet this season. Giants took 2 of 3 earlier.  With the The Loo and the Reds playing each other, the Brew Crew would probably do well to split the series, and expect their division rivals will cancel each other out, barring one of them sweeping. The Giants will be doing some scoreboard watching as the Dodgers are also at home against a division leader.

Braves at Dodgers- A three game set as the Dodgers are firmly entrenched in the WC1 spot, and looking up at the Giants in the  closest division race in MLB right now, only 2.5 back. As mentioned above, there will be some scoreboard watching. The Braves took 2 of 3 earlier in the season. This could be a statement series for both teams. With the Mets floundering and now with some questionable focus as they seem to be more concerned about the fans then the standings, the Braves could start putting some doubt into the Phillies minds if they can take this series. Did the LA Times possibly add some unnecessary pressure to the Dodgers about the possibility of being in the winner take all WC game? Probably not, they've won the division every year going back to when the Pirates were playoff contenders, but you never know. For certain, the two battles out West are major impact statements between teams with contender status.

Astros at Mariners- These two will play 6 games against each other in the next 10 days. The Astros already hold an 8-5 season edge against the M's. Seattle will head on the road to play Arizona three games, then at Houston for 3, then return back home to face Arizona for 3 games again. If the M's are to be serious WC contenders, they have to jump over division rival Oakland, and as it stands today, either Boston or New York. I can't help but think this 12 game stretch is the make or break point for the Mariners as a potential playoff contender, or just one in name only (i.e. haven't been "officially" eliminated). For the Astros, this is a chance to scrape a bug off their windshield, so as to better focus on Oakland.

Lot of empty seats around MLB tonight. I know it's Monday, but Toronto is pretty empty looking, I'm watching Cards Reds and Cincy is empty, Tampa Bay is on the tube against the Red Sox and that place is always empty.

It begs the question, do they really need attendance to make money in MLB, or is that just gravy money?

If Pittsburgh is any indication, a team doesn't need people in the stands. Earlier COVID restrictions and a bad roster have combined to keep fans away. Will the Pirates reach one million in attendance? Nutting doesn't seem concerned.
