As a HS kid, Johnson has some negotiating leverage since he can say he'll go to college if the money isn't right. I think he wants to sign and begin his career but he wants to get as much as he can before he agrees to the contract. So the delay in signing isn't surprising.

The signing deadline apparently is August 1 this year.

You make a good point being a HS kid, but Holiday, Jones and Green are HS kids, and I think all 3 have signed. I am just hoping Johnson does not want to exceed the bonus amounts of the players chosen ahead of him. If he wants that, I think he and Pirates will not come to an agreement. I agree it has only been a week, but a week from tomorrow is the deadline.

I guess this goes with this thread
Just saw on Sports Center that the MLBPA rejected MLB's
final International Draft Offer. Not really sure about the
implications of this. Maybe someone can explain it to me

From how I understood it, the Owners wanted to implement an International Draft in the latest CBA. In turn if an Agreement was reached the Owners would eliminate the Qualifying Offer Agreement. Both sides agreed to forgo an agreement on this until today’s date. It appears no agreement was reached between the parties.

Four more draft choices signed today. The Pirates have now signed 14 of their 21 draftees. With the Bucs returning home beginning Thursday, I am thinking it might be the time to sign Johnson.

Yeah ! That sounds about right. I remember when Baz was in the booth after signing. Last time I ever saw the kid as a Pirate prospect.  :(

Need to get Johnson playing, soon. Hope they sign the 1b guy from S.Carolina .

"4th-rder Michael Kennedy signs with Pirates for $1 million (slot 110 value = $554,800). New York HS LHP, advanced feel for three pitches, deceptive low-90s fastball, slider misses bats, trusts his changeup. LSU recruit." - Callis

With the signing of Kennedy, I now hope they soon lockup Johnson. I am going to assume Johnson will be an over slot signing just like Kennedy. They do not have much money remaining before they pay a penalty. They have about 800,000 remaining before they would have a severe penalty.
