I don't see anything significant being moved ... 4.5 million.
-------

Positive or negative?

He will move 4.5 million in salary. So, negative.

If you have a P2 subscription, there is an article today calculating how much can be saved by trades. The number is much lower than I thought.

Any savings this year would be pro-rated for a shortened season and pro-rated number of games left. The trade deadline is about halfway through the "season". So even if the Pirates found a taker for Polanco, their highest paid player, they would only save about $1.7 million this year.

His salary for next year ($11 million) would be off the books. But assuming the Pirates buy out Archer (almost a given), everyone else is arb or pre-arb. So outside of Bell getting on fire and getting a major raise from his current arb salary ($4.8 full season) there's not a lot of money to be saved, even counting future commitments.

The Pirates have traded for Austin Davis from the Phillies at a salary of $565,000. As of now Greenweenie has the lead with his prediction of $0.

It was his ERA of 21.00 that they couldn't resist.

So is this a good thing or not? BC got off his hands, stopped looking out his window, and made a trade. Is it bad because this guy looks worse than what we have, or is it good because he made a trade? Help me understand.

Are you intentionally trying to be obtuse. I make no comment on whether acquiring Davis is good or bad but rather that he acquired another LMG for a $565,000 addition to the salary level. As soon as Cherington acquires a major league ball player, I will rush to my keyboard to commend him. In the meantime, I will tabulate additions or subtractions to the team salary for the purpose of this contest.
