One is, "The team won't win even if we get the guy."

That's stupid.  You don't go from 3- something to world champion by getting one man.

But, it's a good place to start.

Yinzers haven't learned by now that BOB has no INTENT to field a championbship-caliber club.  If he ever would, he knows that he'd have to pay for guys who get the deed done.

The draft & develop might work for OTHER clubs.  That's "might"....and "other."  We're talking about OUR club.
_________

Here are the top 10 excuses and alibis for not acquiring a player.

1. He is an aging veteran on the decline.

2. He is too injury prone.

3. Acquiring him would bring us no closer to a championship.

4. He would never sign to play in Pittsburgh.

5. He would be a clubhouse cancer.

6. Acquiring him would upset the team chemistry.

7. Signing him would lose financial flexibility for a 1 year player.

8.We already have players just as good as him.

9. We are not the Red Sox or Yankees and they would outbid us

10.He would block this LMG or that LMG from development.

_______

I can see that #3 is a very popular alibi around here with #4 close behind!!!

What do people want? Pick one.

A) A World champion

Or

B) Good teams, into the playoffs- about three times a decade- but something short of a champion. The other seven years range from 2020 to OK.

There is no C.

These are the options under the current MLB playoff structure, including division alignment.

Why?

Because Yinzers, who (supposedly) pride themselves as having this diehard union heritage love "young guys" who don't make bank. As soon as guy nears payday, ditch him for the next Johnny Come Lately LMG and sell them on The Future That Will Never Arrive. Cant get enough of it.

The world champion will have an average roster age of around 29.5 years- if this year is like most of the past 20 seasons. Keeping in tune with BOB and his infinite cheapness, i haven't looked this year, but the Pirates tend to run 1.5 years younger.

Kansas City Royals draft & developed? Houston Astros "young guys"? Heard the talk. Both were older than the Pirates when they won the world series.

The Astros had Altuve. Added Verlander.

We had McCutchen. We had McCutchen.

Experienced players make more money.

Pay the money, or accept that the 1979 world champion was the Pirates' last. That might be good for old guys at the bar, but for the generations who come after us, selfish of us.

Buy what the cheapskates sell you.....or, acknowledge the facts.

Build a team first you say?

My response is- I saw that movie. It stars BOB, right?

I get a kick out of #7.

We shouldn't get him because he won't STAY (here.) "He's a rental."

---------------------------

Why not?

Because we won't pay to keep him....or, he lives in Malibu (which really means- we won't pay to keep him.)

And just like that, the Astros GM has broken the ice by signing Yuli Gurriel to an extension.  He earns a 3 for his team:

The current count is:

Astros - Gurriel(3).....................................................................3

_______

Meantime, Cherington is busy laying groundwork for future deals/kicking the can down the road.

To be fair, there isn't one guy on the roster I would want extended. I want some reduced.

I would take an extension of Kuhl, Musgrove, Bell, or Reynolds.

I heard that Polanco and Crick are willing to sign extensions.
