It’s all about expectations, Surge. The Red Sox, and other like franchises, expect to not just be competitive but to win titles. What expectations are there from our owner? Two words: maximized profits. Winning a World Series is nowhere in the equation.

3 way tie for the third NL wild card spot, and Miami a half game back. Next after them? The Bucs, 6.5 out (tied with San Diego, but we own the tiebreaker over them).

The only team the Pirates own the tiebreaker over that's ahead of them is Cincinnati. Arizona, San Fran, and Miami have them, though the Bucs could still win the season series against the Marlins with a sweep of the final three game series of the season.

I look at those standings and think about the 6 and 10 game losing streaks.

There's just something about seeing the Yankees and Red Sox battle for last place that makes me smile.

Maybe the bucs can help out the Red Sox this weekend !

I see the Rays announced plans yesterday to build a new ballpark. They haven't been able to draw many fans in their 21 years in spite of being very competitive in many of those seasons. I thought that at some time in the near future MLB would pull them out of the area and move them to somewhere they thought would be more lucrative. I hope this works for them. That franchise is to be admired for the amazing work it does to find good players, develop them well, and compete in a division that, combined, may be the wealthiest of them all.

How true this is I have no idea and only the word of a guy I golf with who has a second home in Tampa area. Few years back TB won 2 Championships (NFL, NHL) and almost MLB. I asked him about the parades for the Championships. He told me that 60% of people in the area are implants from all over the East Coast. He said every East Coast MLB team has fans living there at least part time. The Rays deserve much better support from their home town.

I know that a large number of people living throughout Florida, including the Tampa area, come from other cities around the north and east, and their allegiance to their hometown teams remain strong. I'm sure I'd feel the same way if I moved there. I've always thought that regular season baseball in Florida was a bad idea, and apparently a lot of people in Miami and Tampa aren't keen on it either. I can't imagine the owners of both franchises haven't considered moving at one time or another. But it would be borderline criminal for MLB to move the Marlins after the city built them a ballpark. Now the same's going to happen in Tampa/St. Pete. Like you, I have my doubts that enough citizens in the area and the state want to pay for another park for a team that's always had poor attendance.

The Orioles got former staff ace John Means back this month after his prolonged absence following TJ surgery. He took a no-hitter into the 7th tonight and ended up giving up just 1 hit in 7.1 innings. Means' return could be huge for the Orioles as they prepare for post season play.

Braves become the first team to win 100
