It wasn't meant to be funny, but thanks.  Putting a guy who was all over the place on a Mt. Rushmore Of Pitching might be met with a few good comments from visitors. 



Let's just put it this way:  If the best guy you've got not only had Steve Blass Disease, but it was the Steve Blass, then how bad were all the other guys?    We're not talking about any Lou Gehrig here.

I'm surprised that Roy Face is in 18th place and that Friend won 29 more games than Law.



so if I had a do over I would replace Blass with Friend and add Face to my next group.

Law's injury derailed his career. Between 1961 and 1963 he only won 3, 10 and 4 games. Law's top 4 win totals were 20, 18, 17 and 14. But Friend was a workhorse. He won 14 or more 8 times including season with 22, 18 twice, 17 twice and 14 three times. Friend also had high loss totals because he was always a hard luck pitcher getting little run support. In 1963 he was 3rd in the NL with an ERA of 2.34 but had a record of 17-16. In 10 of those 16 losses he gave up only 1 or 2 ERs. And in 14 of those 16 losses the Pirates scored 2 or less runs. With better run support he could have been 27-6 that year. In 1962 he was 9th in the NL with an ERA of 3.06. He won 18 that year but lost 14. In 2 of those losses he gave up only 2 ERs and in 6 other losses he gave up 3 runs. In 8 of those 14 losses the Pirates scored 2 or less runs. That should have been another 20-win season.



Friend's 1960 stats were nearly identical to Vern Law's stats. Friend had a slightly better ERA (3.00 vs 3.08) and a lot more strikeouts (183 vs 120). But Law had better support and went 20-9 vs Friend's 18-12. In 10 of Friend's 12 losses the Pirates scored 2 runs or less. Law won the Cy Young and Friend did not receive a single vote.

When I was younger, I didn’t appreciate how good Bob Friend was. If he pitched today, and put up the same numbers, he’d be one of the best pitchers in the game.

That generation of talent was a bit before my time. I was alive, but too young to have followed the team closely enough until a few years later. Surg's stip says that we had to have seen them pitch. I saw Law pitch, but he was pretty much done and a reliever for some time. Friend last played for the team when I was eight years old. Law retired when I was nine.
