Nice find!

With Ben's experience, I figured that he is well-connected.  I had no idea of their direct relationship.

I get a gut feeling that Shelty's biggest "deliverable" is to just keep the clubhouse together through tough times.  I don't sense that it's much more than that.  That's why he whitewashes things as often as he does.

From that article, the questions about his influences are answered.  Aside from being mostly on the AL side, that's pretty good.  No real concerns there from me.

I don't mean to sound harsh- not meant to be harsh.  He serves his purpose.  Besides, he's an OJT, so there's only so much pedigree he can have.  He's got as much as anyone in his position.

I'm chillin' & killin' while recovering for a while, so I just might waste some of life's precious time.

Makes me wonder if guys like Molly, Baldy, Maddon, etc. have reputations for resting guys, a frequent topic during GameDay threads. Any thoughts?

That is a great topic for another thread GW. I would love to know more about that because those guys would be mentors to Shelty.

I don't know the answer to that but resting seems to be a trend in MLB these days. Hurdle did it before Shelton. I guess it's a matter of degree, of timing, and also how good the bench is. If you have a strong bench you can rest players without weakening the lineup too much. With the Pirates this year taking 1 or 2 of their top players out of their already weak lineup usually killed any chances of winning. And they were taking a look at so many different players that only a few were notable absences from a lineup. But too many times the lineup was conspicuous with the absence of Reynolds and sometimes in the same game when Hayes and Stallings also sat. And it didn't seem to matter if the team had recently had an off day. And it seemed that Shelton particularly liked to rest players after they had a good game or when winning that game would mean a sweep. So his timing was definitely odd. I don't know how other managers handle the issue of how often and when to rest players.

Not just baseball.

I follow the NBA, too. Pretty sure Pop rested Spurs stars years ago, and (pardon the pun) got the ball rolling.

So much so, that I'm pretty sure that, eventually, the commissioner got involved and standards set.

As pricy as MLB tix are, BB tickets [even WWHS] cost SERIOUS dough. Who wants to take a kid to the Wells Fargo Center, pay $1 million, only to see LBJ scratched? Boo!

Yeah, it seems like it used to be that players were rested when they were tired. Now they seem to be rested to prevent them from getting tired.

Managers today are so different than the guys like Tanner and Leyland. The move of lifting Blake Snell by Kevin Cash in last year’s game #6 of the World Series is still a head scratcher. Sure last season was a pandemic year, and pitchers innings were limited, but Snell was in control of the game. Resting players, and removing pitchers is so different in today’s baseball world.

The way our guys play....we're probably better off when they don't. @@@@@
