A lineup full of low BAs reveals that everyone who comes to bat has a low frequency of hitting safely. And not only do we need an unlikely hit, we need it at a particular time. It's no coincidence that they rarely get timely hits. The Pirates rank 29th in MLB in hits.

I think Hayes forgot how many outs there were on that 5-4-3 DP. He made a soft toss to 2B for the force and Newman just barely had time to get the batter at 1B. Trotting off the field, Hayes was talking to Newman and smiling.
