There is a problem with signing Keuchel right now.  As much as the money he might want is the loss of a draft pick because he refused the tender offer he was made.

I looked that up on the MLB site.

A team that receives revenue sharing will lose its third-highest selection in the following year's Draft.

Doesn't seem like losing a 3rd round pick (or 3rd highest pick overall if they had multiple picks in the 1st and/or 2nd) would be  prohibitive. Heck, look at some of their 1st round picks: Sanchez, Newman, McGuire, Connor Joe. Losing a 3rd rounder shouldn't matter. But Nutting has a serious allergy to spending money. And I'm sure his mgt team will explain to him that the Pirates aren't going far with or without Keuchel. I'm sure that's a signing that's not going to happen.

If he wants more than a nickel and a pickle , it aint going to happen.

some team out of the running should sign him and deal him at deadline (assuming he is pitching well).

Brault and Kingham were named to replace Taillon and Archer. Brault pitches Tuesday and Kingham pitches Wednesday vs Texas. Ugh.

Thanks, Bobster for clearing up the compensation question I brought up. I agree losing a 3rd rounder is not such a big deal. But does it make sense for the Bucs with so many problems with the offense as well as the pitching spend the money and the draft choice? This is a team that at best could luck out and be a wild card team.

That's what I'm saying. TBMTIB would surely explain to Nutting that signing Keuchel wouldn't make enough of a difference to pursue it. Not that he'd want to spend the money anyway. This team isn't close enough to justify it to an owner whose wallet has to be pried open with a crowbar.

This is EXACTLY why i scream every year that you need to go into a season with AT LEAST seven legit, viable MLB caliber starters. Not 4 ! Not letting Nova walk to save pennies.

There are ALWAYS going to be injuries.

And there are ALWAYS going to be pitchers who under-perform.

The Pirates always seem content to have 4 good starters, 5 at most.

Drives me nuts ...

Looks like both Brault and Kingham will take the place of Taillon and Archer as they will start Tuesday and Wednesday against the Rangers here at PNC Park according to Clint Hurdle after the game last night. So there is your replacements for Taillon for now.

Is it just me, or does this kind of stuff always seem to happen to the Pirates? If Taillon “didn’t feel right since Spring Training, why not take care of it then? Why keep trying to pitch through it? Injuries are inevitable. But this is ridiculous...Polanco, Marte, Dickerson, Diaz, Gonzalez, Chisenhall, Newman, Archer, Taillon, Burdi, Kuhl, Santana, Crick, and now Kela. It’s amazing the Indianapolis Pirates have even won one game, let alone played .500 ball.
