Every GM's going to make deals they eventually regret.  It's probably a quesiton of avoiding the negative extremes (Bay for Andy LaRoche, Everybody Worth Keeping for Archer, and the lilke.)

I think much remains to be seen about Cherington. His first year as Red Sox GM (2012) they fell from 90-72 the year before to 69-93. Mgr Bobby Valentine got a lot of blame for that. Cherington replaced him with John Farrell in 2013 and the Sox went 97-65. But in 2014 they fell to 71-91.



All in all it was not a successful run in Boston where money is no object and success is demanded every year. It's a different animal in Pittsburgh. Money doesn't exist and success is a pipedream. The GM job of working to rebuild the Pirates from the minor leagues up does not resemble the job in Boston to create a competitive team with serious post season aspirations every year.



For what he's trying to do with the Pirate organization, Cherington seems to be accomplishing a goal of improving the talent level in the minors. But that's being done at the price of totally punting on the major league roster, which is very unpopular with the fans. Of course Pirate fans are sadly accustomed to being noncompetitive. Red Sox fans were used to success at the MLB level.



Until the talent from the minors starts making its way to the MLB roster we won't know if Cherington is successful in what he's now trying to do as opposed to the totally different path he was on in Boston. So at this point we just don't know if he will fail or succeed with the Pirates. As far as the Pirates MLB roster is concerned, I know they punted from day 1 but I think the fans deserve better than the garbage we see every day and that includes Shelton's horrible managing. Because if we're sitting through this garbage everyday while he focuses on the minors, it better be worthwhile when we see the results of his rebuild.

I agree. I don't think that we can give any final thoughts on his work. As with anyone, we can only "grade" on a "to date" basis.



You know how I feel. I think that we were able to field a better roster than the one that we're experiencing today- without much difficulty. I don't think that it was possible to field one that would have been capable to meet the Brewers. They're just that much ahead of our talent level.



The final chapter is a long way from being written. We've seen some kinks in the Cubs, Reds and Brewers armor over the years. Looks like the Cards are going through their kinks now. So, as we did in the past, we will have our opportunity window at some point. Let's see if we're able to time it right.

Well at least Kirby is having success this year in AA. I feel like Kramer washed out a couple years ago and they just been holding on to him for - I don't know why. If they can keep Kirby healthy there's a small chance that he could become a middle reliever at some point, whereas I don't think Kramer has any chance

A point made in the article that I found interesting. Cherington did not want Bobby Valentine to be the team's manager, but his superiors over-ruled him and hired Valentine, regardless.



That, of course, turned out to be a disaster in more ways than one. If I was Cherington, I wouldn't have been pleased about it, and if I was his superior, I wouldn't hold Cherington responsible for it. That's an easy sign of not being on the same page on something as important as choosing the right manager for the Boston Red Sox. I would say that it's understandable that Ben would not see a good working relationship after that happened.

I wonder what a players initial reaction is when he learns he has been traded to Pittsburgh? ;D

Probably not much different than most of the hundreds who have passed through over the years- an opportunity.



They know little is permanent. Make the best of it.



We enjoy them while they're there. They probably think the same, would be my guess.
