Pete Alonso

Post by JollyRoger8 »

The Pirates desperately need a 1B with some power.
The Mets are said to be considering trading Pete Alonso this off season. He becomes a free agent after 2024.
The going rate for a power hitting 1B is between $21M and $30M per year. Would BC and Nutting consider trading for Alonso and signing him long term to speed up the competitive window?

As Maynard G. Krebs would say, "Surely you jest." Nutting doesn't spend like that and Cherington is tasked with trying to build a team without spending that kind of money.

Also, I’m not sure the Pirates have enough to trade to make the Mets amenable. They would want any deal to start with Skenes, but I believe he’s not allowed to be traded for at least a year. Besides, I can’t see Alonso signing a deal with the Pirates. He’s going to want to go to a contender.
