The 1971 World Series was won today fifty years ago.

Blass was magnificent. Clemente, Stargell, Robertson, Oliver, Hebner, Cash, Briles, Kison, Giusti, Murtaugh, et al.

Saw Steve and Bob yesterday. Lots of great memories.

Was there a reunion of some sort? Where did you see them?

They were Grand Parade Marshals of the Garrett County MD Autumn Glory Festival. I was the parade announcer.

Gnats,

Wondering if either has a local connection?

Seems somewhat intriguing- recognizing the Pirates' victory over the Orioles- in Maryland. ;)

That ‘71 Series was the beginning of my love for this game. I was 8 years old and only knew what my big brother told me ( and he knows nothing about baseball). We loved Stargell as he crushed homers constantly. I remember that summer we got little boxes of Milk Duds with cards of baseball stars on the back of the box. Mays, Aaron and no Stargell. Only this Clemente guy. I couldn’t understand why this guy and not Willie. Until that series. Then I understood. What a fabulous player he was. I came to love baseball, the Pirates and Clemente, Stargell, Blass, Oliver, Hebner, Sangy. A glorious team that was gone so quickly.

Bob Robertson is from the next county over, and grew up in Mount Savage, MD, which is less than an hour away. Garrett County is the furthest west county in Maryland, and closer to Pittsburgh than Baltimore.

I grew up in Cumberland, which is about the same distance from Pittsburgh and Baltimore. Cumberland had about an equal amount of fans of each team, which made for a great World Series atmosphere in the neighborhood.

Sophomore at Provo High School. Cemented my boyhood admiration of Roberto that began in 1963 when I was an 8 year old in little league. It proved to be an awakening for many people to how great Clemente really was. We were such underdogs as the O's had that impressive staff of 20-game winners. It was like Clemente personally willed the Pirates to victory.

That year I had told Vance Law, who I didn't know very well at the time, that I was a bigger Pirate fan that he was ;D Vern had semi-retired in Provo and the Law's, with all their V-named kids, were a pretty big deal. He and I were both riding pretty high with that series win and became pretty good friends.

Times have changed so much. I still remember World Series day games through grade school where my friends and I wore long sleeves so we could wire-up to our small pocket transistor radios, listen to the games, signaling to each other across the room when someone scored, and trying to make sure our teacher didn't catch us. And of course, pouring over box scores in the newspaper a day after the games had been played, or me sneaking off of my grade school campus by myself to slip over to the store to buy a pack of baseball cards with the quarter I was supposed to use for lunch that day. Love those memories ...
