You have to wonder how this will affect things at visa time - that's a complicated enough process (apparently) as is, without having to try to convince some computer that it's all right, you're the same guy.

I guess I don't understand why you would change your name just because your sister told you to. Honestly I find it mildly alarming.

“My sister and I have been talking,” Vazquez said. “She decided it’s time. If she says something, I just get it done. That’s the way it is.”

I don't think it's alarming. I think it should probably remind us that everybody has been on a different journey to get to where they are. From the sounds of it, Rivero/Vazquez attributes the fact that he is playing pro baseball and even alive to his sister. She, in many ways, has been his savior. That isn't my life experience, but I've heard enough other peoples' stories to not be surprised.

That's all true but it also sounds like he never does anything without getting her permission first.

One other thing to consider...in many Hispanic countries, people frequently have two last names. This is quite common in Mexico. I don't know how common it is in Venezuela, but, often times someone will be named, as an example, Juan Gonzalez Hernandez. The first last name comes from the father, and the second from the mother. Often times Hispanic people have no "middle" name, as we would think of it in the United States. He could just be choosing to use his other last name. Regardless, I hope we see Felipe Vazquez in the ninth inning today with a lead to protect.

They create name chains out of paternal and maternal last names. So if you run across a Jose Diaz Sanchez (made up name) then (I think this is correct) his dad's paternal last name was Diaz and his mother's paternal last name was Sanchez. He takes both with the paternal last name first. I don't known if that's the case here, though. Her last name Vasquez Cosme.

Yes, that’s correct.
