Draft lottery

Pirates also received the last pick in Competitive Balance round B (after the second round) last week so better news tonight.

"Some thoughts on the 2023 draft class as it stands right now:

1) I view OF Dylan Crews & RHP Chase Dollander in the top tier as 1A & 1B.

2) The 4YR class seems incredibly strong, both at the top and in depth. This stems from the 5-round draft of 2020 pushing players to school.

3) The college SS group looks like the best I've covered (since 2017) and it might be the best for that demographic since Swanson/Bregman in 2015.

4) Currently, 21 of the top 30 players are college prospects.

5) Currently, 11 of the top 15 prospects are hitters

6) The HS class of hitters looks solid though nothing spectacular  when compared to recent years. A bit lighter on HS INF prospects at the very top.

7) The HS pitching group might be the fringiest demographic, but I still like the trio of Meyer/White/Sykora at the top.

In summary: all of these factors have people I've spoken with very excited about the 2023 class. Lots of premium position college players with proven bats and strong track records against high-quality arms.

Now let's hope we are luckier with health than 2022." - Collazo

Found my answer - It is only for round one - Subsequent rounds the Pirates pick in the third slot.

"The lottery only comes into play for the first round of the draft. From the second round onwards, pick order is determined in inverse order of the prior season’s standings, aside from compensatory and competitive balance selections."

Draft lottery

I have a question regarding the draft bonus money? Each team is allotted a certain amount to spend for the players the team drafts. For example pick 1-1 is allotted x dollars, and so on for the teams remaining 19 picks. Does the teams allotted amount to spend come from the teams total revenue, or does MLB give each team the funds from an amateur player pool of money? In other words, does the Pirates amateur 2023 draft money come from their revenue, or does MLB give them additional money to spend on the draft ?
