Glasnow and Bell...

Post by Bobster21 »

I think we (and the FO) can see by now that the Pirates aren't going to the playoffs with this pitching staff. Something needs to be done and Glasnow is a good option. Despite his high walk totals, his BB/9 (4.9) is substantially better than Liriano's 5.6. And Glasnow gives up so few hits (57 in 96 innings) that his WHIP is a very impressive 1.135. The best WHIP in the Pirates rotation now is Cole's 1.317. So even with the walks, Glasnow is far more effective in keeping runners off the bases than anyone on the Pirates. Of course, MLB hitters are going to hit him better than AAA hitters. But I think he deserves the chance to see if he can be successful at the MLB level now, considering that Liriano and Niese are horrible, Cole is hurt and Locke is getting by with a 5+ ERA.

Bell also looks like he could be an upgrade at 1B. Jaso has done well until his recent slump. But Bell might offer more. Jaso could be a good bench player and might net a decent AA prospect in a deal. The FO is always working to keep the minor league pipeline flowing so such a deal might be enticing to them.

i do hope that the silliness of this "hes not ready" argument is not being lost on people.  his ERA is 1.70.    he is giving up less than 6 hits per 9 and almost striking out 11.   his walk rate is 4.9 per 9.    if his walk rate were 3.6 per 9 and he was giving up 7.5 hits per 9 he would be allowing EXACTLY the same number of baserunners and everyone would be fine with it. he would be ready lol.

its not that hes not ready, its more like hes not perfect.   as Kuhl and now brault and his 1.40+ whip get called up as "ready "

I'm going to guess Bell is going to make his debut on Wednesday.

Brault will pitch tomorrow night and then get optioned back down to AAA provided Cole's rehab assignment goes well. They won't need another starter, so Bell will come up and make his debut against the lefty Garcia. I just think the dominoes are set up for this.

As for Glasnow, efficiency along with the control have been his issues that are holding him back. To his credit, he's gone six in his last three starts, but he's recorded an out in the 7th only twice this season. His last start with one walk was encouraging. However, I don't see the walk rates coming down in the majors if there more definitive signs of progress in AAA first. In fact, they'll probably go up as will the H/9 giving him a solid increase in traffic on the base paths. I'd also expect the K/9 to decrease.

Well don't you think that might mean they're seeing something we're not?  They're not holding him down for fun.  And it's not like they're being shy about calling up other guys.  There are all sorts of convoluted theories one could come up with as to why they're keeping him down specifically, but the simplest one seems to be that they actually believe what they're saying.

As they give Alfredo Boscan start opportunities?   Taillon just got shut down for a while on his innings limit, so Glasnow will be up almost for sure Brault next time though.

This keeps NH from having to put his guy, Niese, in the pen after a solid start vs the Cards, his first in 6 tries.

Glasnow isn't going.deep into games because he's strikeout pitcher who can dominate lineups and not another one of our beloved ground ball pitchers who pitch to contact; prone to a bad start every 3 as luck dictates.

AAA hitters aren't swinging, as evidence of his K looking rates so yes his pitch counts are high as he's striking out double digits and alot of them looking. I wish his control was better too, but it's not and we are in a race.

Maybe the mythical Searage can work with him when he is called up? Sprinkle some of that magic dust on his arm

I suspect Glasnow would have been up instead of Brault had he not pitched Saturday.

I doubt Glasnow ' s feeling passed over. He's still younger than all these guys we're talking about. Frank Duncan ' s older, Stephen Tarpley, even Yeudi Garcia. James Marvel is one month younger.

This was probably meant to be facetious, but it kind of hit me. Maybe it is time for Glasnow to spend some time with Searage. Perhaps that is the next logical step in his progression ... A few Searage tweaks might improve his control and bring the walks down.

Glasnow could potentially start on Sunday this coming weekend against the Cubs unless Brault ends up pitching lights out tonight. They would need another starter in the rotation Sunday and at that point there would be no excuse what so ever not to give him a call up. I really believe though he will be up by the end of July and pitch during that 8 game homestand against either the Brewers,Phillies, or Mariners.

Boscan is not part of the long term plan. Him getting blown up in majors would be just a game lost. Anything we get out of him is profit.

Glasnow walking people and getting shelled might hinder development he still has to make.

Boscan is like Fryer and Kratz. They are short term fixes and will be handled differently that our long term prospects.
