Ron Cook article after today’s press conference
I am in agreement with Ron Cook.
Until I see that Nutting is committed to winning by backing the roster with a competitive payroll; then it really does not matter who runs the front office. Good luck Ben! You are gonna need it!

Nutting says, "I wish there was more money that could be spent." Where was that money after the franchise record attendance of 2015? Where was the 50 million payout from Disney? Oh yeah, it went to refurbish the Dominican Academy that has been such a steady pipeline for talent. 50 million???
At a time when fans should be able to feel a little enthusiasm for a change of management, Nutting keeps reminding us that his cheapness will continue and the new president, GM and mgr had better figure out a way to win despite that. Nutting spent, Nutting gained. Nutting ever changes.

I can't stand it when he continues to play the victim. As you point out, there is money to be spent. He just doesn't want to do it. He is a reason why Pittsburgh SHOULDN'T get any luxury tax benefits from others. All he does it pocket it. Rules are in place for the Pittsburgh's of the world to take advantage of this small market excuse. We have seen Cleveland, KC, Minnesota, Cincy do it. Yet, us ... nope.

It's not like the fans want Nutting to become a luxury taxpayer rather than a luxury tax beneficiary. I think he has to move higher say in the 140-150 million in upcoming seasons.

What I take from this so far is that they intend to do the same things only they hope Cherington will be able to do it better. I guess we'll see.

Exactly.
Exactly.

I still think it also comes down to Cherington being able to draft and develop players as well which seemed like one of his strong areas while he was in Boston. He said all the right things yesterday and told Greg Brown in an interview he feels Nutting will provide him the resources to spend enough money to win. So we will see time will tell. I didn’t like that nobody just came out yesterday and asked straight up about payroll and if it will increase or not. Nutting always finds a way to dance around that question without ever giving a straight yes or no answer. But overall so far so good I like listening to Cherington so more then Huntington he seems more like a straight shooter and doesn’t seem like he dances around questions a lot or gives the politically correct response. Looks like a good hire now it’s time for action and less talk.

Drafting and development depends a lot more on luck than what most people think. You can have the best drafting and development people and still have hit or miss results. Successful teams have to be able to do more than draft and develop.
Every team wants to be good at this and for a team like the Pirates it is tremendously important. However, it can also be used as an excuse to say fans won't see results until 5 or 6 years down the road. Cherrington should not have that long to turn the franchise around.

I think the team is in a lot better shape now than it was when NH took over, so it shouldn't take so long. My hope is that the development process is improved.
