Of course we all know what the reaction from the Peanut Gallery would be if the Pirates let Freese go.

I believe with the Pittsburgh Pirates ballclub asset management supersedes Peanut Gallery fallout or any other Howdy Doody peripheral response. Seems to me at this point you would not get much for Freese. There's a better chance of getting something more substantial for him at the trade deadline. Patience pays, he'll be gone soon enough.

Don't get me wrong, I like him but not for this team.  He seems a little redundant role-wise.  No, I wouldn't expect much for him in trade.

But if they were to do that, not that it should or would change a decision, but people would decide that the team was jettisoning someone who didn't "tow the company line"

I'd rather have Freese sit on the bench than Moroff. I'd rather have Moroff play in the minors than be the last man on the bench.

I can see Freese play like Matt Joyce did a few year ago.

We will be active at the trade deadline - not acquiring players, but selling. I think there are at least three or four guys that could or will be moved. DF is one of them.

Having 200 at bats vs ML pitching is far preferrable to 500 vs AAA pitching.   I'd much prefer Moroff make the club and Freese be traded or released.   Considering what 3b went for on the FA market this year, he will basically be released

Getting Moroff ML time to determine if he is really  a middle infielder who can drive the ball is far more valuable to me than a so-so bench player who can't hit RHP sitting on the bench.   I mean come on, we're like a 75 win team or so.  Who cares about the veteranosity on the bench again?  We gotta find out if Moroff has a ML future and he very well might...

I think there are several factors to consider. If this was a contending team, I think Freese would be more valuable on the bench that Moroff. I also think 200 MLB ABs for a guy like Meadows would be less preferable than 500 ABs at AAA. Why waste him on the bench when he could be gaining more playing experience. On the other hand, if this is not a contending team (which it isn't), and Moroff's future is as a versatile utility guy, then he would benefit by beginning the role now rather than being in AAA while Freese occupies that role.

Freese may be insurance against a fail by Moran, but S-Rod could do the same thing with Frazier filling S-Rod's utility role. I suspect Moroff begins the season in AAA with the last bench spot going to Brentz (out of options). But I doubt Freese lasts the entire season. I think they will try to move him (if not S-Rod) and bring up Moroff.

I consider Moroff in competition for a starting spot in the future with Newman and Kramer. Mercer might not be back next year and Harrison's contract is running out too.

I definitely do too. He could be in the runnings for 2b or SS when Harrison and Mercer are traded. If he can hit ML pitching... He hit well late in the year last year.

I think the only way to see if he can hit ML pitching consistently is to face ML pitching. If he's in AAA again most of the year, that question won't be answered. Then you have the same question with Newman

I hope Moroff makes the roster, I want to see if his power is legit. I would expect he will handle 2B at some point this season.
