One way or other we are headed toward the trade deadline. For players it's an anxious time. NH can decide to go for it, rebuild, or some hybrid between the two. He usually goes for the hybrid, sort of a tepid rebuild that has potential for next year (aka, Archer). What do you see him doing this year? If it's a rebuild, what veterans go? If it's a go-for-it, how many top prospects do we lose? (And did we learn anything at all from trading for Archer last year?)

At this point it looks like he has to add. I've always felt this is the absolute worst time to be a buyer but I don't see an alternative. If I'm a seller I'm looking at grabbing Hayes and Tucker and some of the promising younger players. Is anyone more optimistic than me?

We're not good enough to make "going for it" very worthwhile (of course, I said the same thing last year).

Neither Hayes or Tucker should be included in any trade talks the Pirates find themselves in. Hayes is playing this entire season at 22 y.o., and Tucker just turned 23. Both are important pieces for next year and beyond.

Neither Hayes or Tucker should be included in any trade talks the Pirates find themselves in. Hayes is playing this entire season at 22 y.o., and Tucker just turned 23. Both are important pieces for next year and beyond.
I totally agree that Hayes, Tucker and even Keller should not be included in any trade. At this time do not mess up the chemistry of the current club. I would not move Melky, Dickerson or even Liriano . We have about 3 weeks until July 31st, let’s see where the Bucs are as they approach that date.

After the break, the Bucs have some big series with teams we’re in contention with for the division and Wild Card...Cubs, Cards, Phillies, Mets, all before July 31. That should tell us where we stand. With both Bell's and Will Craig's emergence, I think we might see Craig dealt and try to extend Bell.

I could see them moving Craig for pitching, but I doubt they will extend Bell since he is represented by Scott Boras. I wish they could get a long term contract with Bell, but Boras is going to hold out for a pot of gold.

I would be open to trading Tucker and Craig for pitching. kick the tires on MadBum and a couple of the Tigers pitchers

John Perotto reports that the Pirates have no intention of re-signing Dickerson. If true, it's very discouraging that they wouldn't even try. He's far more valuable than Polanco, who could be traded in the off season if Dickerson was retained. But we all know Nutting's allergy to spending. So it's very possible Dickerson could be traded by 7/31 rather than seeing him walk after the season. I think it would be a terrible move, especially if the Bucs are not out of it by 7/31. But nothing surprises me with TBMTIB.

If I knew the Pirates were going to resign Dickerson I would definitely consider trading Polanco, Craig and a 3rd player to try and get Bumgarner. That just might be enough to get it done as the Giants would be getting a Major League ready player in Craig and a proven Major Leaguer in Polanco. I agree that I don’t want to see guys like Tucker, Hayes, or Keller moves at all.

I mentioned this in the other thread and that I hate that Hurdle decided open the 2nd half in Chicago by starting Chris Archer. I think it’s a terrible move seeing how inconsistent he is.
