Yikes.
They get Goldie, we get middle infield Cleveland guy. We aren't catching STL anytime soon, even if there is only one year left on his contract.

Nice move even if only for a season. If Ozuna can get back to health watch out . Lots of power with Carp and Goldie .Best case scenario we will be fighting for 3rd place if everything goes are way.
We need to find a Giles or Bay somehow ::)

Does it really matter? This may be the year that even Cincinnati finishes ahead of us. Baseball wants to concentrate on infield shifts and the imbalance of team spending goes on. No salary floor or cap Pirate baseball is doomed!

It's about the TV deals. Are the Indians trading away their team because they feel like it? Did the Royals management team suddenly turn stupid?
The Cards signed a new $1BN TV contract (plus 30% stake in the network) that just kicked in last year.

Pirates television market is strong. It is time to negotiate the new deal. Most of all, it is time for Nutting to loosen the purse strings. The Pirates need to improve the infield. The team should be able to spend $110-125 million. Some power, and some more pitching would help. Get it done!

Do the Bucs even have to play next season? Yikes. Playing for 4th and trying to stay out of the cellar.
All we have to do is spend 180m on Manny Machado and 45m on JA Happ and we are good.

This is an annual ritual we Pirates fans go through. We watch the teams that consider themselves contenders add key, productive players to their roster while the Pirates try to assemble a roster as cheaply as possible. To their credit, the Bucs have assembled a pretty good rotation cheaply as well as a BP. But they lack the hitting that would make those other contenders worry and they won't pay to acquire it. NH clearly explained the strategy of assembling a team likely to win 78-82 games and hoping that once in awhile they can somehow overachieve. Great plan, Neil. But I'm thinking the Cardinals' plan is a tad better. ::)

While I don't think this team is terrible, it will not come close to competing with the Cards, Cubs, or Brewers. Especially with Polanco out for a long while. There is a need for a true middle of the order bat. I really like the rotation but there simply isn't enough offense. This is a 4th place team as constructed.

The fact that we fret over the loss of Polanco, who is a .254 career hitter, has never hit higher than .258 or hit more than 23 HRs, is poor defensively and a bad base runner, shows how low the bar is for this team.
