With the premium on pitching I would think you would get a pretty good return on Cole. However, you would get a better return still at the July deadline, and could assess by then the teams realistic chances for competing. July is the time for sellers. Buyers are desperate and grossly overpay.

I agree. Cole is a top young pitcher in the game. I am sure teams didn't forget about his high 90s fastball and 19 wins a year ago. Every team would want Cole.

I hope the Pirates lock him up. I think he is kind of stupid if he doesn't take a deal (if offered). He could have steady millions instead of going year to year (especially with his arm injuries).

I agree wholeheartedly. Pitchers in particular are at risk all the time (and this just from the game, not even considering their hobbies like drone-flying, etc.). I would think they would want some certainty and agree to take a little less to get it. I can only assume that the "little less" is too much of a discount from what Boras thinks he can get year to year to encourage a deal.

Thats all we can do...Win the division is the 1st step that we have never taken.

That`s Ok ..... So we need to deal Cole for bats, young bats .

The best part of being a Pirate fan for 35 + years .......Is that i pay attention to minor league players and MLB bench players etc.

Yeah.  If we don't ACQUIRE arms I would move to the other side of the market, dangling Cole out there.  This might be a good time to get a return considering the market.

You won't get a good return ... 65 cents on the dollar.

I'm not so sure . . . he'd by default be the best pitcher available. How often will that be the case?

I thin Cole is still better than Archer who is supposed to net a kings ramson if dealt.

Let's hope this is an academic discussion. If they actually do deal him (Cole) it would suggest they think the season is lost.

The arm injuries is exactly why you don't extend him. He could blow is out and then you have wasted $s. Even at a discount which Boras does not give he would be too rich for the Bucs blood.

I see your point, but people are questioning Cole and if he would sign a long term deal now. If offered, I think he is foolish to pass it up with his arm issues and being set for life.

I don't see him as one of the best arms in the game. To be honest. I wouldn't deal him because you won't be getting a good return. Maybe because I don't think he is a big game pitcher and he doesn't seem to go late in games. Maybe a bit unfair, but that is the way I see it. I don't see a marriage as far as an extension. The guy is bent with the organization; this organization is cheap, so ..

His injuries should make people think twice about extending him for a longer term..
