Dejong to the 40 man roster and called up
Luis Oviedo (last year's Rule 5) designated for assignment.
While I recognize that Contreras likely will benefit for getting more innings under his belt in the minors, it was interesting and encouraging to watch him pitch. Great movement on his pitches, and he could bring the heat.
Hope that Dejong is worth the recall.
I also thought that Oviedo could be a future piece. Hopefully he makes it through waivers.

DeJong did not impress me last year, and I am surprised they brought him up. I know he pitched a combined no hitter at Indy this year, but that is the minors, so again not impressed. I hope he adds something to the pitching staff.

Sounds like Cherington doesn't even let Shelton in on the plans. Shelton is clueless and they keep him that way.

I stated in another thread Roansey was being developed up here. It was mentioned on the broadcast what any prates fan should have already known sending him down stretches him out faster. The comments about Shelton my guess he was tired o f being asked rhetorical questions.

I guess they're getting tired of 3 inning starts. That will take its toll on the BP and very soon they must reduce the BP by 1 pitcher. That might explain the timing of having Contreras prepare to start. They can't continue with a rotation that routinely gives only 3-4 innings and they expect more than that from Contreras.

Neither Shelton nor Cherington can tell the truth: that this is a MLB playing time manipulation to keep Contreras bound to the Bucs for an extra year.
It's not a popular move, but it should be more popular on this board, where fans are smarter than the average bear and appreciate the value of having Contreras around for an extra year. The need to "stretch him out to start" is just the perfect cover story. Mark your calendars: once we're past the MLB games cutoff for the extra year, Ro will be back and in the rotation to stay.
But while we're on the subject, the Buce need to be playing Oneil Cruz every day in LF - not SS - so that the Bucs can plug him into the lineup without blocking Peguero. For all the outcry when he was sent down, Cruz has done nothing to earn a callup since. If he's pouting, it's good to find and eradicate that kind of immaturity now. His insistence at playing SS seems like another sign of that immaturity. He has an easy path to MLB in the Pirate OF, and he needs to take advantage of it.

I think this is a stupid move. Oviedo has more long-term worth than DeJong. We don't need another middling half starter.

But they can do the same thing in AAA while simultaneously limiting his service time. Two birds with one stone.
