Cherington's admirers made it clear those players (and others like Frazier) were trade targets due to their salaries regardless of their performance.
I'm not sure who those "Cherington admirers" experts are but another question would be:

Which Pirates constituted sufficient trade bait from which to acquire prospects if not the ones who were traded? Naturally, those who built up enough of a track record over a few years to be attractive to other GMs would also be the players with the highest salaries (which in the case of the Pirates, isn't saying much).

So if Cherington was to attempt to acquire prospects for the depleted system he inherited but was not interested in dumping the salaries of Marte, Bell, Musgrove and Taillon, which lesser paid players could be sufficient traded bait to restock the minors?

Not sure what anyone can write about the franchise's way that all of us don't already know, but I'll allow for the possibility.

What happened to the "waves of talent" that those same people bragged about when they were kissing up to Huntington instead of Cherington?  They can't have it both ways.

MLB will hold a pre-draft combine in June.

https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/307 ... ource-says

I don't know who was "kissing up to Huntington" or are "Cherington admirers." I don't recall any "waves of talent." The cupboard has been bare these past few years. All of that seems superfluous to the issue, which is the question of whether these recent trades are salary dumps or legit attempts to use the best trading chips to restock the system with prospects.

So I will ask again, if they held onto Marte, Musgrove, Bell and Taillon, what lower salaried players could they use as legit trading chips?

It's not that I won't pay. I won't register or subscribe. There are enough places to obtain information without giving personal information. The Trib's the one that I use for western-Pennsylvania- related inforamtion, on-line.

That may be true, but it's not an issue of not wanting to pay. The last time I went to the site, they required you to register. I'm not registering. Didn't have to for the Trib.

I've read both Zeise's article and found Tim Benz'. I find Benz' to be more on target.
