Gene Alley was my hero as a boy. Had he not hurt his shoulder, he would’ve perhaps been the NL’s best, most complete SS from the mid-60s thru most of the 70s.
I knew you were waiting for this one!!

It took awhile. Darn Surge had to start this thread at 52. I wasn’t sure I was going to live long enough.

You can use the anti aging cream I use, it will take off 63 years. I'm about to become invisible.

There isn’t enough of that cream to help this face.

Alley received more votes than anyone in either league for the 1967 All Star Game. The players voted then, and there were some pretty good players in the league.

Hayes would have easily taken number 13 in his very short Pirates career, however this season will mark his 4th as number 13, so he didn't qualify.
I guess 13 is a superstitious number. No one wore the number until 1942, which I believe is 10 years after the Pirates started wearing uniform numbers.
I've also noticed, the Pirates shied away from number 1-9 for almost a decade, the earliest any of those numbers were worn was in 1939.

I can just see Doc preparing his argument for Ronny Cedeno to hold this distinction!

He could only receive the acclaim if he were the only player to wear the number. And even then it’d be impossible.
