He's a little bit below average shortstop. Pirates fans accepting him as the definition of average and "steady" is just acceptance of this organizations failure and loser culture they've long perpetually pushed.

I don't think he is below average or that great. That puts him in the middle to me. He has done the same thing pretty much every year since named the starter. His glove is very solid too.



Here are his 2017 NL ranks among SS:



WAR 9th, Runs 9th, Hits 6th, 2B 7th, 3B, 3rd, HR 4th, RBI 6th, Ave 5th, OBP 3rd, Slg 5th, OPS 4th.



He was in the bottom half of the 15 league team in three categories. He was also up there in Walks (probably not fair batting 8th a lot) and 9th in Strike Outs. He did not have a stolen base. According to the stats, he is actually above average.
