The Mets tried to give the game to the Pirates but predictably the Pirates fail to take advantage in the 9th (Thank you BR!) and the bullpen does what the bullpen does in the bottom of the ninth.
Bucs should be riding a 4 game winning streak instead they are 2-2.

The Pirates set the franchise record for futility, scoring 4 runs or less in 18 consecutive games. Good job, Ben Cherington, the master of roster construction!

He better be careful, if he continues hitting like this, he will
experience the wrath of the Possum!

The Pirates have scored the fewest runs (130) in MLB, 4 less than the 7-34 Rockies. And it's even worse than that. 19 of those scarce 130 runs came in just 2 games. For the other 40 games, they're averaging 2.8 runs. They're 26th in hits, dead last in doubles, surprisingly tied for 8th in triples, 28th in HRs, dead last in RBIs, 27th in BA, 25th in OBP, 29th in SLG, 29th in OPS, 29th in total bases, 28th in sac flies. But #1 in grounding into DPs.

In a surprising accomplishment, despite being only 25th in OBP and leading MLB in erasing their own runners on DPs, they have still managed to have the 5th highest total of runners left on base. Strange but true!

The way the Pirates do things, if he keeps hitting like this, he might be moved to the clean-up spot.

I'm surprised to learn we're ranked that high in HRs. I thought for sure we'd be around 33rd.

Forgive my rant, but I am still seething over the Reynolds At bat in the ninth inning last night. To recap: tie game 3-3, Bucs have runners on 1st and 3rd with only one out.
What is the obvious smart decision?
You send the runner on first. Most probably he steals second due to fielders indifference. If the catcher does throw down to second base the runner on third (Triolo) breaks for home and will usually score. At a minimum you would have runners on 2nd and 3rd still with only one out. Best case scenario is you have taken a 4-3 lead. The other benefit is that you stay out of a double play.
But in this case Hayes did not break for second and Reynolds swings at the first pitch and hits into the DP!
Mets score in the bottom of the ninth, game over another loss!
I don’t understand how a professional sports team can be so fundamentally flawed!
