Another Waiver Claim

Post by MaineBucs »

The Pirates have claimed right-hander Adonis Medina off waivers from the Phillies.

I know nothing about him except that he is a RH pitcher who is 26 years old who has started in the past. Clearly not a 'safe' time to be on the bubble on the Pirates' roster.

The pitching is a mess and there isn't even anyone in the minors except maybe Contreras or Yajure who can be expected to have an impact at the MLB level this year. Good experienced pitchers cost money so the Pirates don't explore that avenue. So they take a flier on a lot of fringe pitchers and hope some work out. It can't hurt, but these types of waiver claim pitchers don't usually add quality to the staff.

Bobster, I normally share your lack of enthusiasm for a waiver claim, but this one smells different. Lots of Philly fans complaining about losing him. Thought he should've found a spot in their bullpen. He's got some pedigree - actually was in BA's Top 100 prospects a few years ago. And he's only 25, unlike the 28-29 year olds we normally pick up off the scrap heap. In any case, he's worth more than the guy we DFA'ed to make room for him. After failing on over a dozen claimers last year, I think we've got some hidden vigorish due us on this guy. His walk up song damn well better be "Funky Cold Medina".

He's out of options, so he'll get every chance to succeed.
