Great hearing that sentiment from someone like Bowden. He did get one thing wrong, however, regarding the owner and his fan base: Nutting couldn’t care any less than he already does about making a mistake for his fan base. He has one goal, and he never loses sight of it. The only thought Nutting has regarding his pitching staff is how much he’s going to have to pay for it if it gets to be too good.

This is a good take by Jim Bowden, and I know he has more knowledge than me, but I still think signing a free agent like Grichuk or even Verdugo would be huge to the Pirates lineup. Many people aren’t excited about Spencer Horowitz because he doesn’t hit many homers, but I expect many doubles in the gap from him. Some writers have said Cruz could be a 30 30 player this season. If so that is huge! I don’t want a 37 or older player like a Tommy Pham, I am still hoping one of the two players I mentioned above will sign with the Pirates, or they trade for a player like Ward. I like the lineup if one of those three players are in it.

We seem to have an ample supply of suspects to provide the right-handed side to the first base question, especially if they want to take a look at Reynolds there. Any chance that Endy, rather than being a back-up at first, could be a back-up at third? Back problems are debilitating. I don't have any hope that off-season exercises will help. I suspect it's a career ender (remember Eddie Matthews, who went that way). And Triolo may do, but . . .

I don’t believe Endy ever played third in the minors. He played some second base as well as first when not behind the plate. If Hayes cannot play third on a regular basis I guess Triolo would be the answer. IKF and I believe Gonzales played a game or two there last season. You also mentioned the Pirates have some suspects who can play first base, and I agree. I think this season we have to find out what players like Peguero, Cook and Yorke can provide to the team now and in the future. As we get closer to ST I continue to wait for an announcement that the Pirates have filled the corner outfield position.

The Pirates have announced a group of non roster players to ST. On the list is Bryce Johnson, and that is someone I guess I didn’t hear that they signed. He is a minor league outfielder, but surely he is not the answer to their corner outfielder opening.
