I wonder if Ty France is on the Bucs radar. I think Santana would be worth the gamble even because of his age. He could mentor Cruz like he did two seasons ago.

The Pirates current estimated team payroll for 2025 is approximately $70 million. Unless they shed some estimated payroll it doesn’t appear like they can sign many free agent players unless their payroll exceeds the 90 to 100 million dollar range. If Cutch returns at his same salary as the past couple of seasons they are now in the 75 million dollar range. That doesn’t give them much wiggle room to add much more payroll. I seriously hope I am wrong, and they add players to increase the payroll to close to the 100 million level.

They have young inexpensive pitching, and now is the time to supplement the pitching with an upgrade at offense. My hope as of this time next month two additional mid level position players have been added to the roster.

There’s no doubt in my mind the Pirates can spend north of $100 million in payroll every season. They take every opportunity to tell the fans that they have to watch every penny, that prudent spending is crucial to their viability, that their market prohibits them from participating like the other franchises. They’re lying.

Your first sentence was exactly correct. It’s not that the Pirates can’t spend. It’s that they won’t.

It looks to me like the Bucs should be able to make it to 100 million if they want although the 86 million in 2024 was highest it had been since 2017.
if the team pays less in 2025 than it did in 2024 that is a bad sign IMO.

According to the Cots site you linked, of the 15 highest paid players in 2024, the Pirates have cut ties with eight of them. That's $43.6 million now gone from an Opening Day payroll of $86.4 million. They'll be bringing back a bunch of guys who will earn league minimum salaries. They should have no problem spending upwards of $100 million and still leave Nutting with plenty left over. The franchise is worth $1.3 billion, and rising every year. Act like a real owner, Bob, and do right by the community that’s helped make you wealthy beyond your imagination.
