This is the time of year when buyers are forced to overpay (the seller's motto - 'where there's desperation, there's profit'). I don't see management emptying the farm system to pick up even a few good players. Here's an interesting take on the Pirates as "light" sellers, from an Atlanta viewpoint. It's really sad the Pirates are known as an irrelevant team that gets ride of its top players. The article discusses which Pirates the Braves would like to acquire.

And what's particularly sad is that a player like Joe, one of our main guys, would just be a fill-in role player for the Braves. When the teams are on the same field the talent gap becomes so evident.

If the Pirates don’t make some type of move soon they won’t have to worry about being buyers at the trade deadline. The offense needs a lot of help. The last two games that Skenes has pitched he has given up one run in each, for a no decision and they lost both of them. That is a sign of a bad team.

It’s because they’re a bad team that they won’t be buyers at the Deadline. Bob Nutting was blowing smoke up our skirts last week with his disingenuous “message” to BC about improving the offense. It was never going to happen, whether the team won games or not. He’s happy as can be that the team is losing because it means he can dump some salary instead of acquiring a player who would increase his measly payroll. Making/saving money are always the priority.

Hmm? There are like five good teams and five bad teams. All the others teams are moreorless like the Pirates. All of those teams want things from one of the five bad teams.

The next 10 games against the Cards, Mets, and Brewers are critical in my opinion. Winning 7 out of 10 or losing 7 out of 10 will make a big difference in whether the Pirates are considered contenders for a WC or sellers once again at the trade deadline.
BC should have done something before now to improve the offense. He is wasting time. He talks now of internal options. If that’s the case then bring up Josh Palacios now. Jack Suwinski is painfully lost at the plate as is Taylor. With even just average offense, the pirates could be in a solid WC position. They really need a Robert trade now if they are serious about playing meaningful baseball in September.

Luis Robert is injury prone. He missed chunks of the 2021, 2022 and now the 2024 seasons. He injured his hip in early April and didn't return until June 4. Since his return he's batted .202 and is at .205 overall. This is shaping up to be his worst season.

I think it is really difficult to identify hitters that the Bucs could use and who might be available. Vlad Guerrero would be a huge get but not just as a rental. I can remember when the Bucs consistently had 3 or 4 hitters in the top 20 or so in the NL. That may never happen again.

I just found a Pirates related website rumbutter and they are saying the same thing about trades as we are.

I have decided they will not trade anything of value and will just hope the players get better.

This has always been my favorite time of the season. BC waited too long.
