When asked by Dejan if the plan is to keep starting Tellez, Shelton, answered, ""We need to get Rowdy going. That's important for us. He's a guy that we signed in the offseason and, you know, he's not gonna get going by not getting reps."

So they're gonna play him because they spent the money to sign him. If he gets enough reps, maybe he'll "get going" up to last year's impressive .215. It's probably too much to hope he can get back to his .219 of 2022. In other words, what did they expect? They signed a poor hitter and he's hitting poorly. But they're paying him so he's gonna play.

This afternoon’s game was a very low point for Tellez. Two double plays and a strikeout with men on base. His confidence has to be very low, and the Pirates cannot continue put him in the starting lineup. I would not be surprised to see Jake Lamb in Pittsburgh on Tuesday.

Tellez was the ultimate bonehead signing. As bad as he’s hitting, would they be happy if he could get back to his BAs of the past 2 years—.219 and .215? His best case scenario is awful. I know they were intrigued by his 35 HRs two years ago. But he’s only had one other season with more than 13 HRs and that was 5 years ago. So counting on the outlier of his career was foolhardy to say the least. When a player hits safely as infrequently as it takes to get those low BAs, The probability that many of those rare hits will be HRs is very low.

And now Cherington knows that doing the right thing will be an admission that he made a huge mistake with 3 million of his boss’ money. It’s a no-win situation for Cherington, whose incompetence seems to be increasingly on display. He may have no choice but to do the right thing and improve the team at the risk of making himself look bad.

This seems to be the ongoing black hole for the Pirates. A first baseman who is competent.
Lord, it seems like a lifetime ago that we were applauding Littlefield for acquiring Adam LaRoche to fill the 1st base void and give us the "Lefty McThump" hitter we so desperately needed to build around. That deal didn't work out particularly well, but fast forward 20 years later and we're still looking.

It may not be hard to believe that Santana was the best 1st baseman we've had in that time, and he was only on the roster for roughly half the season. Think of some of the names we've had in that time. For reference, just read this old article from 2016!:https://www.pghcitypaper.com/arts-enter ... ed-1898975

We can blame Cherington all we want. We can blame Nutting for being cheap, or Frank Coonelly and Neal Huntington for a decade of failure. The bottom line is, they don't draft anyone who can fill the bill, or develop anyone who can be a regular, or trade for someone who fills the hole, or, God forbid, sign a free agent who is servicable.

Until they get a management team who can build an organization that is sustainable, we'll rehash this issue, and others, until whatever future generation of Pirates fans gets to realize what we likely will never see again in our lifetime...a Championship.

Gonzales in 39 ABs now has more RBIs (9) than Tellez in 116 ABs and Taylor in 111 ABs (8). Tellez and Taylor are tied in RBIs with Bart (51 ABs) and Grandal (42 ABs).
