Keller finishes the complete game with a fly out. Very nice outing for him tonight, giving the bullpen the day off. Just made one big mistake in his 109 pitches. Bucs with three wins in a row.

I won’t say I “enjoyed” it other than he didn’t do any damage to the Pirates. Him going hitless is pretty much what I expect.

Keller is now tied for the MLB lead in complete games.

But seriously, I think there is value in a CG. For one thing, it saves the BP on a day it obviously was not needed. In 99.9% of the games, 1 or more relievers get used in a game when the starter was doing just fine and in another day or two, the manager will say a reliever isn't available because of overwork. But more importantly, it teaches a starter that he has the ability to shut down the opponent on his own. It shows him he can trust his stuff from start to finish instead of leaving him with the impression that the manager felt somebody else better pitch the last inning(s) just to be sure. A CG is a vote of confidence. Being pulled even when pitching well suggests "we don't think you can do this over an entire game and we better get you out of there." A pitcher has to have confidence and a CG is a great way to get it. I don't find much to like about Shelton but I think he made a very smart decision by letting Keller finish.

I would have thought he would be out of baseball by now. Guess I have to give
him credit as far as determination is concerned
