Can someone tell me how many different lead off batters
the Pirates have used this season. That will be a good
indicator as to why this team can't score runs

Valdez will be the 6th leadoff batter in 14 games.

to be fair, this team doesn't have any (leadoff) hitters.

leadoff position (including AB's by substitutions in games) at least from hand count:

7-51 .137 BA
15-59 .254 OBP
.176 SlG

8BB 15K 2SB 5 Single 1 Double 1HR 6R 5RBI

If that isn't bad enough, subtract the three games Hayes was leadoff (3-11, 4RBI, 3R, 2BB, 3K, 1 HR- .273 BA, .385 OBP, .545 SLG, .930 OPS) well, I don't need to do the math any further, because imagine if it were you all the other games, and that's what the numbers would pretty much look like.

.100 BA
.217 OBP
.125 SLG
.342 OPS

Small sample size or not, Pham/Frazier/Suwinski/Bae have been all but useless as a leadoff hitter, except for first game of season (Pham) and 7th game (Frazier) where those guys are 0-26 in the other 8 games those guys started.

For right now, it looks like Hayes found a spot in the order to his liking, but why do that? With IKF doing well from the 9th spot, it seems almost logical that we at least have a leadoff, second spot, and ninth spot in the order. Cruz is set at third, Bart 4th.

But...........Hayes is batting 5th, Bart is batting 3rd, Cruz isn't playing. IKF is in his familiar 9 spot. Reynolds is in his familiar 2 spot.

Odds being what they are, chances are picking the lineup out of a hat would pretty much produce a 50% chance you'd get a guy in what appears to be the correct spot. However, using what might appear to be statistics, which I'm assuming they at least consider, you could at least get half the lineup 100 percent correct. The rest, sure, pick out of a hat.

When you add a bullpen that pretty much blew 3 games, and starting pitching 3 games, that's three games I count where if the leadoff hitter contributes something approximating a replacement level stat line, they probably win 2 of those 5 games.

Falter walked the first 3 Reds batter. Then a DP and a 2-run HR.

Starting lineup with 6 guys batting under.200
As Elton John would say, “It’s a sad sad situation and it’s getting more and more absurd”
